Lure color n Profile

we (my brother and i) went fishing with a buddy yesterday and i noticed a pattern (both of us used a 10lb. braid with 4 ft 15lb floro leader)

 

All of us were texas rigged and we fished from the same boat.

 

soft plastics

I went with a zoom trick worm (motor oil)

he used a zoom speed worm (june bug red with red flakes)

my bro used a yamamoto senko (june bug)

 

I tried to play the numbers game and thought by the end of the day i would eventually get a big one and lost 

 

pattern that emerged

I caught 4 fish for every 1 they caught

BUT they got the quality sized fish.

my fish averaged at 1.5 pounds they averaged 3 pounds each.

 

 

the trick worm is a skinny worm compared to GM and the speed worm 

is the diff in profile a determining factor?

the diff in profile is not much... so is it a color factor?

or is it just the casting spots we chose?

 

i even matched their retrieve speed,  kept my worm hopping and dragging the bottom.

 

what should i try next time out?

 

ONE IMPORTANT observation after... most of the fish they had on the stringer had its eyes literally popping out and looked bloated.

June bug catches big fish. My buddy has multiple 8lbers this year on a trigged June bug trick worm. 

But the profile does matter also...

hard to say which was the main factor but switch it up next time and see if your results are the same.

Doesn't sound like color was the determining factor, because you all caught fish. Sounds like the bigger one's went after the bigger profile. This is a guess, there's more info needed like:

* Clarity of water

* Where were the fish caught, every one of them

* Time of day the fish were caught

* Whether conditions

* Structure and/or Cover (I doubt you all fished the same structure at the same time)

 

What should you use next time? Let a new pattern emerge, it's a new day and you rarely repeat what happened in the past.

I think the profile and sink rate probably accounted for the difference, but could be a number of things. You should all go out and switch lures, then you should all go out and fish the same lure for all three, then plot the results, that will give a better idea, otherwise it's human nature (evolutionary brain wiring actually) to want to assign causality, keeps us sane and feeling safe, shhh! that sounded like a saber toothed tiger, oh no, just a big armadillo looking thing, carry on...

Today my buddy and I used the same bait most of the day.  Granted, I had the bow, but did not take all the targets as I wanted him to have fun.

He caught 2, 1 lb'ers and I got 10......most over 2 lbs and 1 over 4.

Sometimes it's just the sutilties....

Fish a magnum trick work Texas rigged. Your size of fish will go up

Who was fishing in the front of the boat?  That guy usually has first lock at the best spots and should catch more.

Have a theory that wider baits catch bigger fish. 

Could be who was in the front of the boat.

Could be accuracy of casting.

Could be retrieve. 

Or..combination of all of it multiplied by a little luck, plus conditions divided by confidence.

In other words, fishing

i agree with this thats why i tried to match their cadence as well.. however i think the profile game them a better sink rate

thanks for the inputs guys.. i was the one in front of the boat. 

 

accuracy of casting was also a factor... it was ledge fishing and i all of us searched for rocks n gravel. i guess they were able to hit it more.

 

one clue i have is the biggest ones of the day looked normal when they were pulled out but after a while they died and had the eyes popping out literally, they were also puffed and guts in their throats. 

 

any ideas on why this happened?
