Lake of the Woods-August

My buddy and I will be heading to Lake of the Woods the last week of August in the Morson area.  We have been there before in early June and the smallmouth were on fire!  Would anybody care to share what to expect the last week of August?  Structure type, technique and/or tackle suggestions would all be appreciated!

Fish the shoals. Smallies should be between 10'-30'. It really depends on the water temps. I would throw a tube, drop shot or damiki rig.

Or football jig... sunken rock piles, shoals.  Everything is about experimenting to find the right depth that time of year..

LOTW is a huge body of water...and even "...the Morson area..." can describe a lot of different areas.

 

If you are fishing shoals in the big open areas to the west, you'll need completely different techniques than if you go a bit north and hang a right into Sabaskong bay with all kinds of islands, shoreline and structure.

Thanks for the information thus far.  I was hoping to be able to find them along the rocky shorelines again like we did in June but it looks like shoals it is.  Regarding the “Morson area”, we will be fishing the Sabaskong Bay, Miles Bay and Sunset Channel areas of the lake.

It's been a long time since fishing that area and the weather late August can be hot and humid with thunderstorms. There are lots of islands near Sabaskong bay, Blueberry narrows and as enter Split rock narrows that always has current flowing.

This area is good walleye and musky fishing, ok for smallmouth I wouldn't say it's good, it gets fished heavily by resort guides walleye fishing and smallies tend to be secondary but located in the same reef and rock areas.

If you get outside of Blueberry narrows there are some excellent small granite islands that have good smallmouth and Champ bay just inside split rock across from Wolf island that has clear water and some big smallmouth.

My favorite Smallnouth lake is Crow lake (Kakagi) about 8 miles above Nestor Falls. Crow is a clear water lake known for lake trout, doesn't have walleye and the locals ignor the smallmouth that average over 4 lbs, big smallie in Canada.

Crawdad colored  1/2 oz medium diving crabkbaits*, 4" GYCB Hula grub # 221 cinnamon or 330 green pumpkin on 1/4 & 3/8 black plain football head jig, split shot rigged 6" Roboworm oxblood light red flake works everywhere. Ends of islands with wind current and reefs.
