Super User jbsoonerfan Posted June 26, 2019 Super User Posted June 26, 2019 I still have a Core 50mg7 so I will say a Chronarch 50mg. Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 26, 2019 Super User Posted June 26, 2019 Still got mine! ? I'll take to the lake occasionally to remind myself why I upgraded! 4 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 26, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 26, 2019 Geez, I still fish with a lot of these "old" reels ? Curado 100B, 200B, Chronarch 100B, Curado 300E were a few I saw listed that are still in my every day line up. I'd really like to have my Chronarch 100BSF back, regret selling it all the time. 2 Quote

Casting was hard to describe, baits just kindve kept going just a bit more than they shouldve for the effort put forth. All while being very manageable. Ditto That reel is just plain amazing! I wouldn't sell mine for anything. Mike Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 26, 2019 Super User Posted June 26, 2019 On the subject of Fenwick rods, I missed the boat on the Technia AV's the first couple of years they came out. Then Rogers Lures in Liberty, MO got a bunch on them in for a big sale, at the same time they had the Berkley Trailer show up. I think Fenwick is owned by Berkley or they are both owned by someone else, someone like that. Anyway a fishing buddy of mine (who is admittedly hard on gear) bought 6 of them and within a year he'd broken all of them. Makes me think that the Technica AV's were a little fragile. I've bought half a dozen in various sizes of the model that replaced the Technia AV - AETOS - and they've worked great for me for 5+ years now. I've only broken one and it was my fault (the electric window on the passenger side of my Explorer ate it), Fenwick still replaced it. As for reels, I used to have a Diawa, purchased in 1985 or 86, that had the mag force magnetic braking, but also had a deal when you engaged the freespool, the line guide would separate and go to either end of the frame, so your cast basically had no friction from the line guide. I can't remember the model #, but I remember I was bummed when it got stolen, shortly after I moved back to the KC Metro area and I've never seen another one - in a catalog or a store. I'd like to have that reel back. Also stolen in that event was the reel I learned on, a Shimano Custom X 2000. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 27, 2019 Super User Posted June 27, 2019 For reels it is easy. The Daiwa TDZ platform. So many options and upgrades. Second would be the Daiwa Pixy platform. Really enjoy casting the light stuff with casting gear. Agreed with the others who were noting some of the older Shimanos. Love my Curado 100D and Chronarch 100D7. Super solid reels. Quote
ohboyitsrobby Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 Abu black max 1600. I've had a couple and loved both. 2 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted June 27, 2019 Super User Posted June 27, 2019 My favorite "old" baitcasters would be my old ABU 5500c. 3 Quote

I have three of those in my rotation, all upgraded with Carbontex drags and Abu Rocket clutch washer/fiber brake blocks. I use them for stream trout and throwing weightless worms, small topwaters, and small crankbaits for bass. 2 Quote

Pretty much this. After finally getting to use my Bantam MGL I don't think I'd want any of the older reels. I nearly pulled the trigger on a used Core 100mgfv during the off season and now I'm so glad the guy decided not to sell it as I can put the money towards another Bantam. 1 Quote

If interested I have a AVC 66 MHF Arimide veil Design Techna AV baitcasting rod, early 90', in excellent condition that would sell. Tom Quote
flat Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 My Chronarch 101A is still the best reel I have mechanically. Smooth from thumb bar operation to cranking like just like when I bought it many years ago. The casting ability doesn't compete with modern light spools though. An 00 Conquest 101 is my workhorse for cranks, some scorpion 1001's for pitching, I guess I dont have a favorite. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 I believe the new stuff is better as a whole but knowing what I know now I'd have kept the 10 or so curado e7 and e5 reels I had and kept a lot of money in my pocket over the last 10 years or so. I've spent a lot chasing "better" and have missed those reels many times Quote

I've got a 7' M and 7' MH Techna AV. I've got a few 6'6" casting rods that never seem to get used...with the exception of a 6'6" MLM Aetos. Really enjoy that one. I've come to prefer longer rods. Especially in MH. Quote
