Super User A-Jay Posted June 25, 2019 Super User Posted June 25, 2019 If even bad press is good press, Mr Long is getting a bunch. And being the opportunist, as he seems to be, if there is a way to capitalize on all this 'attention', however malignant, he may just find a way. After a brief stint at a clinic to help him with is 'addiction', pick one (oh, you know that's coming), expect to see a tell all book, or an interview with Dan Rather or Oprah, perhaps even a one on one with our own Glenn May . . . Would anyone be surprised ? ? A-Jay 6 Quote
Glaucus Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 I keep thinking about a case for fraud for making money off giant bass he either didn't catch or didn't legally catch, but there's no definitive proof; and fraud for taking tournament money from anglers who were legitimately catching their fish, but again there's no definitive proof. What we have is credible eye witness accounts, but that isn't enough in the court of law. I'm thinking about how he likely did try to kill other anglers who knew what he was doing by loosening their wheels, and how that criminal behavior needs to be punished, but again there's no definitive proof. I'm thinking about how he used intimidation tactics, especially regarding a 13 year old boy, when he made it clear he knew where he slept and shined lights through his window, and how that criminal behavior needs to be punished, but again that can't be proven in the court of law. This scumbag will get away with almost all of this. The only thing I can see him being in legal trouble over is snagging the bass in this video. How much trouble in the grand scheme of things probably isn't a lot, if any. I'm sure a case would be made about stalking, recording without consent, cries that he isn't the man in the photo, something, anything. Sadly it seems it is up to the industry to punish him. Take away all his sponsors, take away his lake records, and ban him from all the lakes. No tournaments, ever, although it seems he stopped tournament fishing because he's a fraud who couldn't answer questions honestly. 1 Quote

813basstard Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 How he cheated with someone else in the boat was unbelievable. I mean truly unreal he was that far gone. 2 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Wasn't Long in the boat with Mac Wheatley & Jed Whatshisname when Dottie was caught weighing 25 lbs? ** I just looked it up, Long did not fish with those two** It would be interesting to know those two's opinion of the article & video. Quote

Manabu Kurita caught his 22 pound, 5 ounce bass with live bait which is 100% legal in the area he was fishing. He also has an impressive resume of trophy bass he caught on artificial lures. As far as I am concerned his catch is the most legit +22 pound largemouth bass caught this century so far. 1 Quote
Todd2 Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 I'd never heard of him until today, crazy story. 2 Quote

His is THE world record to me. I'm sorry, the Perry fish is bulls. There is no info or anything. Thr "picture" can't be verified and it wouldn't even get laughed at before tossed in the trash today. Dottie passes all of the tests, but because of California's rule about being hooked outside the mouth, it was disallowed. I believe in that 25-01 more than 22-04. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 25, 2019 Author Super User Posted June 25, 2019 I would be surprised if we ever hear from Mike Long. Does anyone remember Mike Hart Mike Heart was a tournament bass angler out west who was caught cheating in the US Open at lake Mead by putting torpedo weights with hooks to add a few oz’s. Hart won several events with his partners Bill Siemantel and John “Zank” Zankoski. Siementel managed to weather the storm Zank didn’t. I knew all 3 men and never thought Mike Hart was a cheater until he was caught red handed. Tom 1 Quote

People can get in legal trouble and do get in legal trouble for cheating in tourneys. The problem here is how long ago those tourneys happened and the lack of evidence other than another person's word. Quote

RB 77 Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 I live and Bass fish in San Diego county and let me tell you the town is BUZZING about this right now. That article is an incredible piece of investigative journalism and a surreal expose piece with photographic and video evidence. Eye witness accounts the whole nine. It’s just insane! 5 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted June 25, 2019 Super User Posted June 25, 2019 Wow. Just...wow. Watched the entire vid, now reading the article. I've run into at least one guy in the tech world who is like Mike Long. Lies, cheats, swindles way into deals with vaporous hardware/software but made money hand-over-fist in the process, even coming across as genuine...until caught and exposed. Many moons ago... Kudos to the exposé all around. As the Muggles say, "truth will out"! Quote

Janderson45 Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 Saw this news earlier this morning. Just sad to be honest. I don’t feel bad for Mike, seems like he got what was coming to him, especially after threatening a kid like that. Just a sad reveal for the sport in general, not sure what positive spin can really be put on it... It’s too bad that money, fame and sponsorships get thrown into the equation and completely warp an individuals morality and sense of what it means to be a sportsman. Hind sight is 20/20, but you have to wonder why Mike Long never had any legitimate cast to catch footage of a true lunker. The age of the go-pro should have called a lot of his dubious efforts into the lime light but somehow he evaded even that. If Matt Allen can produce numerous videos of cast to catch on 10+lb bass why couldn’t mike long? Really makes you wonder. Anyways - I won’t be giving my Dobyns 784 mike long jig rod back any time soon. One of the absolute best in my arsenal. The guy may be a fraud but I assure you this rod is the furthest thing from it. 1 Quote

He's been off the radar for a few years, Kellen wrote a hell of an article to put the nail in the coffin- there's no book coming from Capt Redbeard.... Arghhhhh mateys Quote
