Sight Fishing a Giant

Good morning BR,

 

I'm about to head out to canal in which just yesterday walking there I spotted a 6lb bass. Might not be a giant for some but for me it sure is! I know the exact place were it is, I saw it last year and both times I did not have a fishing rode on me. He/she might not be the biggest bass there but I sure think it is! So to the question,

What are some good baits for a bass which is very finicky and lives with the most bluegills I have ever seen? The canal is very pressured, I have used the drop shot with a 4" finesse worm and a jerkbait and really killed them on it (not literally). What could work?

 

Bass stage: Pre-Spawn

Water Clarity: 2-feet 

Depth: 4-6 feet

Bottom: Soft/Leaves & "Snot" grass 

Quality of water: Polluted

if you know where it hangs out stay back a ways and toss a Senko in the area. 

let it lust sit there for a while.

Lure choice is very important for sight fishing, especially if the fish isn't on a bed because you likely will not get many chances before the fish is onto the fact that something is going off and shut down completely. My #1 bait for casting at fish I can see is a wacky rigged Senko by a mile. Stay back as far as you can, low to the ground if possible, and try not to make a big splash if possible. Casting onto the opposite shoreline and dragging the bait into the water is great if it's an option.

Where are you located that bass are still in pre spawn?

 

I like a Texas Rigged Havoc Pit Boss or a Wacky Rigged Senko for these situations.

Lure selection is not as important in my opinion as understanding the bass's attitude!

 

When approaching the bed if she leaves in a cloud of dust I probably aint gonna waste time on her.

 

Now if she meanders off & quickly returns that means she's locked on the bed. She doesn't know it yet but she's got a lip piercing in her near future!

 

It doesn't matter what lure ya never ever pitch it directly into the bed!

 

What I'll often do is take a 2' piece of mono, a 1 oz weight, a 2" bobber, & toss it a couple feet from the bed & blind cast.

I think the OP is seeing cruisers, not fish locked on beds. Doesn't mention anything about beds in his post and says it's Prespawn (although I'm not sure where it's still prespawn right now).

Pre-spawn the bass are cruising (moving up) looking for food & eventually a bed (nest).
