Super User FryDog62 Posted June 23, 2019 Super User Posted June 23, 2019 While releasing a fish... got the hook out and released the fish but didn’t realize the line was wrapped around the fish’s inner gill - overboard she went... and dragged the rod/reel with it. Don Iovino MajorCraft rod and Daiwa Tatula SV. Ouch... 1 4 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 23, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 23, 2019 Got a good idea where it's at? The old chain stringer with all the hooks open drug along the bottom is a good rod retriever. Big issue might be how long the fish remained wrapped up and potentially drug the rod from where you last saw it. 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 23, 2019 Super User Posted June 23, 2019 FryDog, happens to everyone sooner or later. So far I have given the water gods: one of my favorite rod and spinning reel setups; a great net; a telescopic lure retriever; many crankbaits; four Whopper Ploppers in the grass and wood; and at least about 10+ pounds of plastics and their hooks/weights; and no telling what I will lose in the future. You just have to roll with the punches and then go out and buy some more stuff. Remember, you can't have enough rods!!!! 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 23, 2019 Super User Posted June 23, 2019 What's the bottom like, vegetation, and how deep would be my concerns. Quote

Anyone have ave a coupon code for TW?? Will do my best to feed the bait monkey and keep the economy going.. Quote

Dom Hendricks Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 If you know about where it is, I would be diving down for it unless you were alone in the boat. Same thing happened to my frog setup last year. I found it in the third trip down. Quote
diversity210 Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 That really sucks. I know how you must have felt through. A few months ago I lost a rod opening my rod locker. It was a Duckett Micro Magic pro and Im pretty sure it had a lews BB1 on it. Thankfully I only had 1 rod on that side at the time. My wife just had this shocked sort of laugh and it irritated me so much I wanted to strangle her, but of course Id never do so (wink wink) haha. She must have known how ticked off I was because the next week I got a brand new St Croix Avid X in the mail. She knows those are my favorite rods even though I loved that duckett rod. Of course it was the wrong rod. So I graciously thanked her and sent the one she ordered back for the correct one. So something negative turned into something positive. I still think about going back and diving down for my rod though, Its been a few months so Im sure the reel is garbage but I think I could salvage the rod, but the water is always super muddy back there because its close to a river inlet 1 Quote
BadContrakt Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 I don't mean to remind you of lost gear but I'm a big Daiwa fanboy and haven't bought any new gear in something like 3 years. Wanting to know how you felt about your SV and if you'd buy it again. The SV was released a couple years ago and I've always wanted to try one. I have the original Tatula, the CT, and the Type R (also the Lexa). Love them all. Quote
Flatrock Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 10' of water is not deep.. I would have dropped anchor and did a little diving for it, maybe with a life vest tied to a rope to follow me in case I got too tired to float back to the boat. 1 Quote

I can’t skip a baitcaster consistently without SV. The Tat is a bit bulky to palm but not terrible, great value overall... 1 Quote
Hillbilly Bennett Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 I’m using an SV for the 1st time this year. I love it! Paired it with a Shimano/Loomis Conquest and the setup is just phenomenal. I use it for my lighter weight stuff that I want to throw on a baitcasting setup. Amazing reel and incredible rod. 1 Quote
Allaroundfishing Posted July 10, 2019 Posted July 10, 2019 In 15 years of fishing I had never lost or broken a rod, 3 weeks ago I had a rod tip break on me and in those weeks since ive lost one combo (luckily fairly cheap) over the side of the boat, broke my ned rig/dropshot rod, snipped the tip of my swim jig rod off in the tailgate... in a span of three weeks 2 Quote

rth548 Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 Back in the 80's, I kicked an Ambassador over the side as I was putting the trolling motor down. Heard the splash and looked around, and saw a spinner blade twirling towards the bottom. I dove in and caught it just as the rod butt hit the bottom in about 20 feet of water. Had an awful time getting back in the boat, but I managed. I remember that every time I fish that cove. 1 Quote
Super User geo g Posted July 15, 2019 Super User Posted July 15, 2019 You learn valuable lessons every so often. One time I was running the rim canal on Okeechobee. At 50 MPH I hit some wake from another boat and watch two rods and reels go over my head and into 20 feet of dark murky water. Lesson, never run anywhere without your gear tied down. Even if it was less than a mile. The lack of a 10 second effort cost me hundreds of dollars. I never did that again. 2 Quote
drscholl14 Posted July 16, 2019 Posted July 16, 2019 Not good. Almost had that happen last two weeks ago during a tournament. Darn near jumped out of the boat to get it! Quote
haggard Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 I recently lost a St.C MH/F with Shimano Curado 201K in 6-8 ft of water in a narrow channel, when a wind gust caught the bimini top and helped launched them overboard. A couple friends suggested diving but my fear of touching the slimy bottom, and those killer turtles, kept me from going that route. Tried casting for them to no avail. Went back a few days later with a 10 ft long PVC poke/rake for 2 hours, no avail. Finally bought a $25 snorkel and mask, went back to the spot, anchored the yak and dove in (with PFD on, just scanning from the surface), had the combo back in 10 minutes. 10 ft of water, especially if you know the spot, is doable! Stay safe and if you can bring a spotter all the better. Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted July 17, 2019 Super User Posted July 17, 2019 I've been very luck in retrieving rods that have gone overboard. Lost one overboard at night in 20ft water way off shore. I immediately dropped a buoy, then tied on a treble hook with a carolina rig weight on top of it. I hooked the rod in less than a minute. Quote
