Lewis13 Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I'm going fishing in 2 weeks and want to buy a new rod and need advice. Pretty new to this type of stuff so excuse any misuse of terminology. I'm trying to decide between a 3000 size reel, medium heavy that's 6'6 with 10 pound line or a 2000 size reel, medium that's 6' with 10 pound line. I'll be going for bass/walleye with this rod. I have a second rod for pan fish but it's 6 pound test Medium light and I wanted a better rod. I have the rod picked out, I just need help deciding which size would be best for it. I'll be fishing on an open lake without any thick grass or anything in Wisconsin over a 2 week span. Quote
Big Rick Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 Assuming you're referring to a spinning combo as opposed to a bait caster? Quote
Lewis13 Posted June 20, 2019 Author Posted June 20, 2019 @Big Rick Correct, sorry forgot to throw that in. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 20, 2019 Super User Posted June 20, 2019 What is your budget? My advice would be 6'6" to 7' medium power fast action rod w/2500 size reel and 8 lb Sunline Super Natural mono line. Tom Quote
Lewis13 Posted June 20, 2019 Author Posted June 20, 2019 @WRBI don't go fishing too often and am not rich enough to buy anything expensive. I'm spending about $50 on the rod/reel. Just something to use 2 weeks of the year for some fun that'll be reliable. Quote
EWREX Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 7' medium rod with a 2500 reel will cover a decent amount of techniques for you 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 Most of the big chain sporting goods stores sell spinning combos at your price. For bass and walleye in WI, I’d recommend a Med. Power rod rated for 1/4oz-3/8oz lures. I doubt the action will be listed, but Med/Fast is a good, middle of the road action. Chances are the reel will already be spooled with 8-10lb. test line. Be sure to set the reel’s drag properly and have fun. 1 Quote
Lewis13 Posted June 21, 2019 Author Posted June 21, 2019 @papajoe222 Thank you! Found one that wasn’t pre-spooled but I bought it. My friend knows how to do that and has 10 pound test so he said he’d set it up for me. I have some 1/2 oz lures but I’ll get some 3/8oz ones. Quote
