NRX 893 & Dsrk Sleeper

Would you throw a Dsrk Sleeper on an 893? If so what weight would you want to throw and what weight would be the max. I know the weights the rod calls for but to me the 3/4 sleeper fishes lighter than it's weight.

I have never fished the dark sleeper so I am not sure on how they fish. The NRX 893 is one of the most loved bottom contact rods ever. It excels around 1/4 to 1/2 oz. It is awesome rod and sensitivity is hard to beat. The sensitivity leaves me smiling as I feel ever bite. For a 3/4 oz lure, I may consider the 873C CRR. The is an amazing big jig, football jigs, texas rig, and carolina rig rod. If you can swing the money the 873 and 893 are among my 2 favorite NRX models. They are so amazing and cover 90% of the bottom contact I do.

The 893 is amazing. I agree 100%. A 3/4 oz lure may be at the top of it's range but it's easily my favorite bottom contact rod. If you plan to throw more around 3/8 oz-1/2 oz, I would do the 893C. But if you plan on consistently going with 1/2-3/4 oz, I would consider the 873 or 894. Any NRX with a Chronarch MGL, Bantam MGL, Aldebaran MGL, or Metanium MGL is heaven. Hope this helps.

3/8 or 1/2 oz Dark Sleeper on the NRX 893 for me. Maybe 3/4 oz in complete open water but I have not tried.

Steez A is nice on it. I think the new Antares A (MGL) would be sweet on it and look forward to trying that out one day.

NRX are quite a tip heavy series. Aldebaran would be unpleasant for me but if you're less sensitive to tip-heaviness, ymmv.

Were talking a huge difference in reel weight between the new antares mgl and the aldebaran mgl. I'd love an antares but I just can't seem to get over the weight when the aldabarans feels so light.

I love the way it feels with a Metanium MGL. The Aldebaran MGL is so amazing too but definitely think you could find a use for it whether on the NRX 893 or another rod. It makes me smile when I pick it up at my local tackle shop.

 

A NRX 893C and Metanium MGL is heaven!!!!!

Because these rods are already so light, it's not so much the total combo weight that you feel during fishing, it's more of the tip constantly fighting against you when you're trying to drag the bottom-contact lures when raising the tip. It's almost as if putting on a super light reel (i.e. Aldebaran MGL), make the combo "feel" heavier.

I feel like you can get away with putting on heavier reels and still have a super light feeling combo and personally I wouldn't go any less than Metanium MGL on a NRX 893. Again, YMMV.

I agree! i love the nrx 893 but is tip heavy for such a light rod. to me any reel less than 7oz feels bad. the bantam mgl is sweet on this rod

A 893 and Metanium MGL is money $$$$. Balance is good, sensitivity is off the charts.

the NRX 893 balances perfect with the Met MGL. NO complaints at all about balance.

Balances even better with a bantam. 

Now the metanium is is spot on with the nrx 853! Jmo though.

It does!? I've considered a Bantam but have been concerned due to loving the met mgls and aldabarans. If it really feels as light because of balance I will go Bantam. I've heard so many great things about that reel.

Bantam MGL and Metanium MGL are among my two favorites. The Bantam MGL is a BEAST. However, the Aldebaran MGL is amazing too on certain setups.

The bantam is slightly heavier than the met but to me it makes a huge difference on the 893. The reel is also a little more compact which to me feels better in hand with the thickness of the reel seat/handle area-I have medium sized hands. But If you love the way it feels with the metanium than no need to change but get a bantam anyway! Lol. Youll love it along with the others

I agree with the 3/4oz might be a touch heavy for the 893c. I fish the 1/4-1/2oz on a 853c and love it, but when I tried heavier it felt a touch to heavy. Now the 893c is a bit more stout so I would try it but if it was my main goal. The 3/4oz feels pretty good on my 894. Gives you a reason to buy a new rod lol

I’m not sure you want to launch a 3/4 oz lure on a extra fast rod that is only rated 5/8... you snap a cast a little too hard and could be trouble.  

 

FWIW, the 3/4 oz is the size of DS I use the most... smaller than that they tend to float up on retrieve.  I throw them on an Orochi Braillist and I think the sensitivity approaches an NRX, maybe not quite as much but I don’t think I’m giving up on anything either.  I can easily throw 3/4 oz and even the 1 oz which hits the top of the lure rating for a Braillist.  Never had a problem, very good sensitivity.
