dnj21 Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Any particular shaky head design better when fishing areas with small to mid size rocks (fist to basketball size)? Struggling to find a head that doesn't spend most of its time hung up in between the rocks. Tried several kinds but must be missing something. Appreciate any suggestions as to what has worked for you.... Quote

Kidflex Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 Unfortunately all the shakey head styles get stuck in rocks pretty easily. I’ve tried all styles. Going lighter has been more effective as to avoid getting stuck for me. 1 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 18, 2019 Posted June 18, 2019 We sell quite a few Mega Strike Shaky heads and also our Dredge Shaky. They both work really well. 1 Quote

I found a specific jig that hangs up much less in that environment , was hoping a change in head style would do the trick but maybe it is a weight issue.... Thank you to all who chimed in, I appreciate it!! Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 18, 2019 Super User Posted June 18, 2019 Visualize what the jig is doing. You are shaking the jig into every nook and cranny between the rocks and expecting it not to hang up. The only way that can happen is you don't let it fall on slack line inbetween shaking. Lighter weights sink slower but if you let it fall on slack line into crevices it will hang up when you pull the line tight without finessing it. Forget trying to cast a shaky head on slack line in rip rap rocks, vertical works better. Try using 1/8 oz with 6" worm. You can add a few strands of living rubber legs or whiskers about 1" long through the nose end for bumpers. Tom Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 19, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 19, 2019 A lighter football shakyhead has been the best way to avoid snags for me. I rarely go heavier than 1/8oz. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted June 19, 2019 Super User Posted June 19, 2019 My most snag free approach incorporates a light-weight jighead with the line tie coming from the nose of the head (a la Brewer's Spider head); buoyant line (Fireline with a nylon leader); and an upward, hopping, pendulum retrieve; rod tip high, never dragging the bait. oe 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 19, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 19, 2019 I go weightless near any rip rap Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 19, 2019 Super User Posted June 19, 2019 The football shaped shaky head work better for me around rocks than the ball head ones do. However, I seldom worry about that because (a) I carry LOTS of shaky heads and (b) once the bait is stuck, the cast is ruined anyway, move the boat, get on top & slightly behind the bait and a little nudge and it almost always comes out. Tournament situation - different story - break of & retie ASAP. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 19, 2019 Super User Posted June 19, 2019 I don't understand the physics or the 'why', but the Owner Ultrahead Finesse Ball Head handles rocks very well for me, as does the spider head suggested above by @OkobojiEagle Quote

In really snaggy rocks, it may be one of the only presentations that works effectively though. Quote
