Dobyns colt

Does anyone have any of the spinning rods. A friend of mine wants to try fishing out. I let him use my old spinning set up this weekend but the rod is really soft and not that great. He doesn’t really know how involved he’s gonna end up. I’m trying to find him a half decent set up to get started. A medium fast colt and president spinning reel is $140 for the pair. All the reviews I’ve read say it’s a great bang for the buck. I’m looking for good enough in case he goes full weekend warrior. I feel this may be a good starting point and let him by some tackle without getting in to deep in case he doesn’t really get into it. Thanks for any help.

I bought the 7 foot Med Light for drop shot and other finesse rigs.  I have only fished with it a few times but it is well built, just like Dobyns other rods.  I really like it, and would purchase another in the future if I needed another rod.

Not a fan of the Colt rods. I think there are many other better options for an entry level rod at the price point. The Fury on the other hand is a a lot of rod for the $, the weird power rating not withstanding.

I had a 7' m colt spinning rod..fished with light plastics, and about 1 1/2 hrs into our fishing, I tied on a 3/8 oz jig, proceeded to make a 40' cast and 8" of the tip broke off. I've owned Dobyn rods in the past and liked them. Now I have other brands. TW gave me a refund on the rod.

I had one for a month and a half untill I broke it between the last line guide and tip top (totally my fault I snapped it with my  fingers trying to get out of a snag).  I should be getting a replacement from dobyns by the end of the week. 50 bucks replacement fee is better than 80 bucks I guess.  I really like the rod.  Mines a 7ft m/l.  Works like a dream for ned rigs and weightless t-rigs.  As soon as it gets back I want to try drop Shotting.  As of right now I’d buy another one.  I’d like to try the fury. 

 

Its a fast action with a soft tip.  Only complaint I have and honestly, I didn’t  notice it untill a rod builder in the rod building forum pointed it out.  The epoxy on the line guide threads does look like little footballs of epoxy instead of being flat like normal rods.

I honestly have no problems with the Colt series. But prefer the Fury and up because of the cork grips.

 

All of Dobyns are very well balanced and that is where most of the sensitivity comes from.

I like the sensitivity of the Fury, but that's the only thing they got right in my opinion and from my experience. I hate their false power and action ratings, the cork on the 2 of 5 Furys I kept (bought in March, sold 3) is already chipping away from casual use, and the spinning rods (kept 1 of 2) wouldn't fit my Pflueger President reels correctly (narrowed that down to probably being Pfluegers fault) so I got some Daiwa Legalis reels to put on it and they both have massive line slap when reeling (with braid, mono, or Hybrid, and I use thin diameter line). The guides on the rods aren't straight or even. One of the rods was received bent. One had a cracked guide. Worst fishing purchases of my life.

Thanks for all the info guys. Those aren’t really the responses I was hoping for. Can any one recommend another medium fast spinning rod in roughly the same price range. Again this is for a friend just getting started.

That's like saying I got rid of my Vette, and got a Ford cause my Vega sucked.(and it did!)

The Colt is clearly a price point rod that missed the mark, and not a reflection on the other Dobyn's lines, IMNSHO.

Honestly, just getting started?  I always recommend the Ugly Stik GX2 6'6" or 7' Med action.  I've used them to catch bass, catfish, bass, carp, gar, shark, speckled trout, rainbows, flounder and I EVEN landed my 1st jack crevale on the 7ft med on a size 3000 reel-- toughest fight ever but man that rod can hold its own.  Also, if your friends arent careful, these rods can also take a beating in the car, etc.

 

If you really want to get him something a little higher, just get him the Ugly Stik Elite-- not too expensive and a pretty dang good starting bass rod.

 

I've finally upgraded to the Dobyns Fury line and let me friends that don't fish often use the gx2's.

Ugly sticks aren't all they're cracked up to be - compared to my other rods, they're almost like pool cues. I know, I have one in M/F that next year is going to be replaced - by a Diawa Aird-X...I have two of those for BCs and am very impressed with the sensitivity and power given the price-point.  Spend  the extra $5 over the Ugly-Elite - get an Aird-X.

My statement was not a reflection on the other lines in the dobyn's line up. Personally I lost some faith in their budget lines, hence, I went for other brands. If I could afford them, I would grab most any rod in the upper line up. Hope that clears that up..

I have an ugly stick elite ML and it made an excellent ned rig rod. It is very sensitive. It probably wont take a beating but I am careful with my gear. It had no trouble hauling in 5# and less all day the day I used it.

The Daiwa Arid X spinning rods are really nice for the cost. Check them out for your buddy.
