Vision 110 hookrash

So I splurged this off season and bought some Megabass jerkbaits.  Went out about 2 weeks ago in MI where they were still in prespawn and absolutely killed it.  58 fish in 6 hours most 13-14 inch range.  Nothing big but the 3 that I was using- the paint was completely destroyed and not from fish- but from the hooks (which are super thin and super sharp with reverse barbs- which I didn't know existed).  Is this regular for them?  

 

I mean I work them hard but from 6 hours of fishing?  I was disappointed in the durability of the finish on the baits but they did catch fish so I was not too mad but wanted to see if that't the norm.

I use that bait - quite a bit.

Prefer to change out that stock hook (hate it).

I use Gamakatsu Short Shank Magic Eye # 4.

A Mustad KVD Elite EWG short shank in red on the front is option.

I get a few.

Also if you care to, using a small rubber band to secure the hooks when not in use can reduce some hook rash during travel.

I do band my baits- they were brand new no rash and 6 hrs later had solid circles around each hook area.  Would you say that is consistent?

As much damage the hooks do to the lure, they absolutely ruin a good landing net...

To answer your question, yes, that is consistent. And it won't affect the action of the fish catching ability of the bait. These baits have such a great action that the hooks swing out from side to side and cause the scars. It does, however, ruin an otherwise beautiful, expensive bait. But, know this.... It's more the ACTION and less the PAINT that catches fish with these baits. The Visions castability, action, and profile are second to none and will catch fish when other jerk baits fail. So, update your hooks as A-Jay suggested, making sure you don't upsize too much to kill the action and suspension, and keep fishing it. Mine are so beat up they're dog ugly. I've replaced hooks over and over and keep on catching.

IMO - baits where the finish has been marred by swinging hooks are better than new baits.  Here's the logic - There must have been something about this bait which made me tie it on in the first place.  Now, I've fished it enough that swinging hooks have marred the paint somewhat.  I must have gotten bit at least occasionally, because had I not gotten bit, I would have changed lures, so the finish wouldn't be as marred.

Here is a for instance - I have 5 Lucky Craft Pointers in my favorite color - Table Rock Shad.  I didn't buy these all at once, Lucky Craft has slightly changed the Table Rock Shad color from year to year.   4 of these baits are brand new, less than 15 minutes of usage between all 4 of them.  The 5th one is stuffed everywhere, The chartreuse sides, originally all one color are now a blend of chartreuse and ivory ( the underlying base plastic color ).  I've changed out and swapped weights of the stick on belly weights so often that from the lip and 2" back on the bait is a mottled black & white left over glue pattern ..   In other words, this is a used bait - not used up but used.  The stick on eyes have long fallen off - been replaced and those have fallen off also.  Currently it has one eye - I think, don't remember.

 

Guess which one I grab when it is time to fish jerk baits?  Unless, for some reason I believe that I need a deep diving version, the skuffed up one is the one I grab and will continue to be til I lose it.

 

This is all very logical, right?  My recommendation is that you have a skuffed up bait, use it til you lose it.

Looks like a terrible idea to me. Maybe they are trying to ruin their own lures so you'll have to buy more lures to replace them?

hard baits get rash and loose paint when you use them, specially when worked erratically like a jerk bait, and you catch a bunch of fish.

That actually seems likely to me. If people have to replace their jerkbaits twice as often then, well, they make twice as much.

@dgkasper58, those Katsuage outbarb hooks in my opinion are made with very light wire, and the outbarb design IS to protect the paint finish. I’ve noticed those hooks can become deformed or out of shape after a good battle or pulling the hooks from a well hooked fish. I try to “reform” the hook when this happens, sometimes unsuccessfully. And congrats BTW, 58 fish in 6 hours is one hell of a day...

I hate those hooks. I don't understand how a barb on the outside is supposed to hold any better than a barb on the inside, but I can tell you, they make the line hook removal technique impossible.

That's what I did, but it was hard to do since I'm right handed and it was in my right hand. Trying to get my left hand to do anything that involves fine motor skills is like trying to explain something to someone who doesn't speak the same language as you. Those hooks flex so much and it was right in a callous, amazing how easy it went in but how much force it took to push through. It kept tearing wear the hook went in, but the hook wasn't breaking through the skin any further. Eventually used an Exact-O knife to make a small cut where the barb needed to come out and pushed it through that way. It wasn't hot out, but I was sweating a lot after that 10 or 15 minute ordeal.
