St. Croix SCll Med/light casting rod

I was recently given a bunch of St. Croix rods by one of my daughter's co-workers. Once I came down from the cloud, I checked them out good. Two had broken guides and one, the Med/Light Fast casting rod had one bent so bad, I didn't even attempt bending it back to position.  It's rated for 8-14lb. line and 1/4-5/8oz. lures.  This seems more in line with a Med power rod.

Anyone own one of these? Are St. Croix rods generally heavier powered than their listing?  I planned on replacing the guide and using it for wacky rigs and drop shotting, but after checking out the specs I'm thinking  in-line spinners and1/4oz. blade baits.

I had an old Premier that was I think a 6-3 Medium... don’t know if that is the rod you have, but I thought it was fairly close to Medium action.  I would think a 1/4 inline spinner would be about ideal for what you describe. I used to throw Mepps 4 and 5’s with mine.  

 

My opinion only, but today’s St. Croix ML and M rods are fairly true action/weight.  If getting into MH and H, I think they tend to be thick, tip heavy rods.

I have owned the mojo bass 6'8 m-xf spinning rod and a avid x 6'6 Mh-f casting rod. They were both stout rods that were definitely under rated. The medium fished more like a medium heavy. The medium heavy casting seemed better in that respect. Great sensitive rods that should last a long time.

I've been using a premier casting 6'6" medium light for around 20 years. Using it mainly for lighter topwaters such as the skitter pop 7, chug bug, or 1/4 ounce crankbaits. Great rod in my opinion and fun to catch fish with. Like most here I have a pile of very expensive rods and this is one of the few older ones that hasn't broke.

 

Edit: I used it many years for throwing jerkbaits as well, worked wonderfully.

I had the same 6'6" Premier ML about 10 years ago too. Had the same power but stiffer tip as my Team All Star 6'4" M SBR. I sold the Premier and kept the All Star for my river smallie rod. I definitely consider the ML Premier a M. Now  St Croix once  recommended to me their 6'6" Avid ML  that was rated for 3/16-1/2 lures as a rod for small topwater/lipless/jerkbaits it was probably a more true ML.

I have a ML Avid woudlnt consider it to be equal power to my mediums in other brands quantum,shimno,13,okuma, its has less power.
