teabag259 Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 The Ned Rig has morphed into my go to set up on the lake where I fish usually. So I want to get some specific equipment that will make me ideally as successful as possible using it. I’m looking for a medium light rod and a decent reel to go with it. I figure something around $50 for the reel. I’m not sure what brand or length of rod. I just want something good that won’t break the bank. Can someone steer me in the right direction so I know what to get when I shop this weekend (at Field and Stream)? Thanks. Quote
Glaucus Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 Fenwick Eagle and Pflueger President 25 = $120 total Daiwa Aird X and Daiwa Legalis 1000 = $125 total Fenwick HMG and Pflueger President 25 = $160 total 6'6" - 7' rod 2 1 Quote
Glaucus Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 I used a Fenwick Eagle in 6'6" and a President 25 most of late last year for the Ned Rig and it was absolutely perfectly great for it. $60 rod, $60 reel. I never found myself needing more. Want is another matter. And most of the time I was lifting the fish from this wall without a net. The rod handled it perfectly fine. Fenwick and Pflueger are like Peanut Butter & Jelly. 2 1 Quote
teabag259 Posted June 7, 2019 Author Posted June 7, 2019 Thanks. This information is exactly what I was looking for. 1 Quote
ike8120 Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 I am using a Dobyns FR702SF with a KK Sharky lll 1000 1 Quote
LCG Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 The beauty of the ned rig or midwest finesse fishing is the simplicity. Pretty much any rod medium light - medium power fast - extra fast action. I am partial to fenwick hmg ml-f and bps carbonlite 2.0 m-xf for the technique, but a $20 rod will do the trick. As for reels I have two president xt size 30 reels that have been going strong for 2 years now no sign of wear. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted June 8, 2019 Super User Posted June 8, 2019 Hard to beat a fenwick Eagle and a president. Another option is is the Lew’s Mach II combo. On sale at DSG for $99. I bought the pieces of the combo separate as I wanted a size 100 reel and their Medium Light Ned Rig specific rod. I paid around $50 for both. The Mach II reel is aluminum framed. 1 Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 8, 2019 Super User Posted June 8, 2019 My current Ned rig is a 5'9" Fenwick HMG with a small size (10?) Pflueger President reel. I try lots of different lines, if you're really serious abut Ned rigging, I don't think that you can beat straight 6 lb fluorocarbon. Of course, that is not the line I currently have spooled, I'm trying 10 lb nano-til and previously I used a 10 lb braid and I don't remember the brand. Braid worked ok, both straight to the bait and with a short fluorocarbon leader. Switched to nano-til just to try something different. Truth be told, haven't got the new rig wet yet, health issues. & weather & weird work schedule have only allowed me to twice this year and next week doesn't look good. But hey, it is in the fishing truck, locked up in the fishing shed, rigged up and ready to go. p.s. Should you not have a fishing shed to keep your gear out of the sun I DON'T recommend keeping a lot of gear in the truck. Summer heat inside the Explorer can get weird and melt stuff. Quote

The main Ned guru in my area says that the Berkeley Cherrywood and Pfleuger President make a good Ned setup. I’d look for a ml in my favorite length. Their website shows that they carry both. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 9, 2019 Super User Posted June 9, 2019 I use 8lb test sufix advance on a lews tournament pro 7.5 to 1 baitcaster with a Johnny Morris Patriot rod medium fast action 7 feet long. 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 9, 2019 Super User Posted June 9, 2019 For the lower end - my Ned/Drop-shot rig is the Avocet spooled with 8# Suffix Super 21. 1 Quote
GeekOutdoors Posted June 9, 2019 Posted June 9, 2019 I fish nedrigs on an HMG 6'9" ML/F paired with a carbon-braked Sedona 1000. If you are on a budget, I +1 on the Sharky III 1000 but if you want to Buy in-store, a Shimano Sienna or a Catana size 1000 would do ! I use 15lbs braid with a 10lbs fluoro leader ! 1 Quote
gilkeybr Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 I have tried 6', 6'6", 6'9" and 6'10" all ML/F (or XF). I'm really loving the 6'10" and I think I would really really love something even a bit longer (7' or so). I can't recommend a specific brand/rod. But length is something I would have a preference on. 1 Quote

gilkeybr Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 Its a 13 Fishing Omen Black 2. It was on sale late last year at TW. I paid $83 for it. They also offered a 7'1" ML/XF which is what I planned to buy, but it sold out before I ordered! Both of these lengths/tapers are available in the 3rd version of the rod. I have absolutely no complaints about my 6'10 1 Quote
Matt_3479 Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 I’ve recently been throwing them on a shimano expride 7’ light+ and have been extremely pleased with this set up! Quote
