jbmaine Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Hard to believe it's been 75 years and the greatest generation is almost gone, my dad included, US Navy, he never talked about it. A very profound thank you to all who have served. We are forever grateful. 11 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 6, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 6, 2019 Men brave beyond comprehension. We owe them so much for running into the teeth of such a formidable enemy and surely knowing the odds of survival were not good. Who knows how different things might be now if not for them. 5 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 6, 2019 Global Moderator Posted June 6, 2019 May God Bless them all. Including my Uncle Jim. Platoon Sgt. 101st Airborne Division. Who crashed landed in a glider and died behind German lines on the first night. I wish I would have met him. Mike 4 Quote
Harold Scoggins Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 ..."For every hero's name that's known, a thousand died as well. On stakes and wire their bodies hung, rocked in the ocean swell; And many a mother wept that day for the sons they loved so well, Men who cracked a joke and cadged a smoke as they stormed the gates of hell."... ... From the "Shores of Normandy" a song written by Jim Radford. Jim was a 15 year old galley boy in the Merchant Navy on June 6, 1944. 9 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Going through grade school & high school, we were taught about D-Day but never really understood what the soldiers went through. Then I saw the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan" as a thirty-something and was astonished. Using that portion of the film to help illustrate what occurred would be very effective. 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 7, 2019 Super User Posted June 7, 2019 To hear about it and learn about it in school is one thing, but to actually hear the stories from those that survived the landing really opens your eyes. God bless and thank you. 1 Quote
