I have 2 k's which I like but are kind of wide and heavy, and while they are great moving bait reels, I don't much like them for techniques where i palm the reel. I recently bought 2 chronarchs, which feel like a big upgrade from the K to me.  I am curious if people are still liking the 70, or is it obsolete compared to the newer shimano reels?

I have a Scorpion 70 and a K, I like the Scorpion by quite a bit more. That being said, my Curado DC is on par with the 70.

Dont think the 70 is obsolete at all. Had 70HG then bought Chronarch MGL(on sale $234)returned it bought a second 70(XG). I also have an upgraded Chronarch CI4 so although the MGL was very nice it just didnt excel over what I already have. It 70 is also at the top compared to any other reel at its price point. I would place it above the Tat SV or any LOSE for same $$.

Yea, for me the K also has way more line capacity then I would ever need, which seems like a waste.

I'm assuming you prefer the DC because of cast distance?

Yes, I use the DC for moving baits like a spinnerbait, lipless, squarebill, chatterbait, etc. I throw and or pitch a soft plastic on my Scorpion.

I've got several K's and after buying a few SLX's I much prefer the smaller reels as my hands are smaller and I like the size of the SLX.

I'll probably end up picking up a few 70's this winter for more finesse applications like light texas rigged plastics.

I've been using a Curado 201K and 71HG for two seasons now.

I use the K as a heavy duty workhorse, paired with a MH/F and braid for

- deep worms & jigs

- bottom contact

- heavier cover (frogs etc)

I use the 71 as more general purpose, usually TX rigged soft plastics, paired with a M/F and copoly.

The 71 is by far my favorite, feels much more comfortable, palmable, just right (I generally fish a little more on the finesse side). Line capacity has never been a problem.

If you like palming a Shimano, isn’t the alderberan the best option?

I've never really considered an aldebaren.  I handled one in a store one and it felt way too hollow, much like a toy. Also, it becomes much more difficult to get a balanced combo with such a light reel.

I am leaning towards the 70 platform.  I much prefer the black and red of the scorpion to the silver curado, but the curado comes with a U.S. warranty.  What do you guys think?  The scorpion just looks so sick lol

If the reel says Shimano on it , it is hard to go wrong.  I've got a. Curado 70, I like it.  IMO everything that has been written about how the 70 is harder to get dialed in is true, at least it was harder for me to get it dialed in like I wanted.  Now, after a year or so, I like it and I've got a decent, inexpensive rod that it works good on.

Don't have a K, so I don't know.   Got a Curado 150DC fro Christmas and I've fished with it twice (annoying health issued have kept me off the water for a while, I will get better).  Like the DC a lot for throwing spinnerbaits, so far that is all I've thrown on it.  I think it would be great for throwing any reaction bait.

Thanks for the input.  I am tempted to just get a jdm met or another chronarch rather than a scopion 70 for only $50-$100 more.  The Yen seems to be getting stronger, which is bad for anything JDM.  I feel like I need to go to a shop and find a 70 to handle.

I've got two Curado 70's I use on jig/texas rig setups and really like them. Tried one on a small/medium cranking setup and hated the feel.

Why? Smaller handle?

No, I could feel the gears really working with the cranks and didn't like it.

Love the size and way they palm on my bottom contact rods though

In the first instance the Curado 70 is a small reel and of course with that goes considerable less line capacity,  They are sweet little reels and various anglers buy them for a variety of reasons.  Some like them only for pitching and flipping and others like them for the small size and comfort in using them.  I am in that category with both of my XG's spooled with 10lb flouro and used only for plastics fishing.  The handles are easily changed to a 96mm if so desired.  That said, I also like my Curado I, K (10% smaller than the I), the Chronarch 150 and the MGL.  different reels for different techniques.

70 It is old super obsolete , there SHIMANO you hear it. Other reel got MGL micro module gear, even the cheaper SLX got updated with MGL spool.

I've owned the k, 70 and slx. I liked the profile of the 70 but honestly think the new slx feels like a much better built reel. Similar profiles but the 70 just never felt "great" to me for a 200 dollar reel. Also several times I've heard of people having 70's break after light use. The k reels are nice and would make great workhorse reels. The slx is amazing considering its price point.  I've got 5 now and they all have been great so far. If I wanted the 70 I'd spend half the money on an slx.

I can't imagine the 70 being a favorite cranking reel - it picks up line pretty fast (I have the slower of the 2 ratios available) and doesn't hold much of it.  I wasn't crazy about the feel until I switched out the handle assembly for the Metanium handle.  Now I really like it for what I use it for which is on a finesse jig rod.  I don't know about picky; when you fish the same 5/16 oz jig and trailer combo, you forget how hard it was a to set up.  If you throw lighter baits and want a fairly fast (or very fast) retrieve, this one is really good at this price range.  I have a new Chronarch MGL with a slower retrieve for crankbaits.  I haven't fished it a ton, but it hasn't blown me away, and I think the retail price difference in these reels is $80.

The Curado 70 has served me well. It is as palmable as a Lew’s Speed Spool LFS, but with a better breaking system. It casts light lures very well.
