Jonny15678 Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Can I use 12lb mono for wacky and Texas rig on a medium spinning rod or is that too much? Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted June 4, 2019 Super User Posted June 4, 2019 I would never use over 10 on a spinning rod. To many issues. I use 8 on a baitcaster for that. Quote
PourMyOwn Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 I've done 12 on medium spinning equipment before, it isn't ideal but it will work. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted June 5, 2019 Super User Posted June 5, 2019 Never gone over 8 lb test on a spinning rig, mine were all 2500 sized reels. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted June 5, 2019 Super User Posted June 5, 2019 For me, wacky is 10 lb braid to 6 to 8 FC T rig varies depending on bait size and environment 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 5, 2019 Super User Posted June 5, 2019 Wacky rig for me is on my Avocet with 8# Mono. Weightless or light-weight T-Rig is on the Trion with 10# Yo-Zuri. 12# on a medium spinning reel is usable, but not ideal. T-Rigs 1/2 oz or over are on the President with 20# braid - I don't use a leader. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 5, 2019 Super User Posted June 5, 2019 Yeah, I think that 12 lb mono on a spinning reel is asking for it. Quote

Glaucus Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 Wacky for me is 10lb straight braid, 10lb braid to 6lb fluoro leader, 6-8lb mono, or 4-6lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Quote
waymont Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 10lb braid to 8lb fluorocarbon for wacky rigs 15lb braid to 10, 12, or 15lb fluorocarbon for Texas rigs depending on the cover I’m fishing. Quote

Depends on the reels spool dia and dia/ memory of the mono line. Size 4000 reels can handle 12 lb mono. Sunline 12 lb Super Natural is .011D vs Suffix Advance 12 lb is .014D, 8 lb is .011D. Berkely Trilene XL 12 lb is .013D, 10 lb is .011D. Based on .011 line dia you could get by with Sunline Super Natural 12 lb mono using size 2500/3000 size spinning reels. Tom Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 Should be fine. I throw my wacky rigs on casting with 40# braid and a 16# fluorocarbon leader. Quote
Mbirdsley Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 For wacky rigging and light t-rigging on my spinning rig I use 10 lbs power pro neon braid with a 10lbs seagar flouro leader ( Seagar is just what I have at the moment. I have used stren FC before and it works). The real is a size 30 quantum accurist pt on a 6’6 Berkley tactix wacky rod. My fav combo and has landed me a lot of bass. This combo along with a pumpkin zoom swamp crawler t-rigged with 1/8 oz tungston weight netted me 15 large mouth in the 14-16 inch range out of quinacassee last Saturday. Could have had more but, weather moved in. I only have one rod for this right now. so I’d rather go a little heavier for when I’m fishing the slop like I was at quinacassee. Quote
bunz559 Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 I do 15-20lb braid connected to 6-8lb leader on spinning or do 10-12lb flouro on baitcaster. But honestly, if you have 1 or 2 rods and need things to be as versatile as possible, I don't see why 12lb wouldn't work. Wacky rigs, I usually like lighter line because of the types of baits and presentation you most likely will be throwing. My suggestion is spool your reel up with some 15-20lb braid and learn to tie a few different connecting knots. I pretty much throw braid to leader on everything except crank and top water. Anytime you need to switch it up, you only have to waste a small amount of flouro. I really like the FG knot. Quote
ike8120 Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 I have been using 12lb copolymer on my spinning rig. No Problems Quote
Todd2 Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 I think 10lb on most lines is a good balance of strength and handling, but yeah, 12 lb can be used. Quote
