Basic spincast reel question...

Thanks in advance for the help, and my apologies for being such a beginner. 

 

I have started seriously fishing for the first time this year and purchased a spinning reel as I have always had that style. My buddy got his license, and needed a rod. He said he wanted a close faced spincast style reel. I purchased him a Zebco, and took him out to a open pond.

 

We spent about an hour and a half fishing, and TWICE the line twist around the bolt that keeps the top of the reel, not the cover, on. The cover had to be removed, then the metal inside cover had to be unscrewed. The line had to be untwisted from around the bolt in middle of the reel, or cut. Brand new reel, happened twice. Looking for some guidance on why this happened and how to avoid it.

 

PS lucky **** caught 2 fish despite the issues. Lol

Spincast reels are notorious for constantly messing the line up and otherwise malfunctioning. It takes all of 2 minutes to learn how to use a spinning reel. You can get something like the Pflueger Trion or Abu Garcia Silver Max for the same price as a Zebco 33. Well worth learning the spinning reel to avoid these problems.

My wife uses spincasters very few issues the only thing she has to do is when she is throwing real light lures she has to retighten the line on the spool. The thing I found out is when putting the line on the spool do it the same way you put line on a spinning reel. As far as value that depends on how much you want to spend the Zebco 33 was the best reel for the money years ago but the quality of that reel has dropped off she now has the Zebco Platinum and last year I bought her a couple of the Zebco Bullets and that is her favourite reel now.

Few issues I see that could have happened. 

#1 - Reeling slack line

#2 - Cheap line

#3 - Put the line on the reel backwards

Daiwa Goldcast and Zebco Omega are both very nice when it comes to spincast gear. I've used both a bit and would choose the Goldcast if I was going to use one (and actually do own one). My FIL has 2 Omegas, can't really go wrong with either. 

 

Try not to reel against the drag or when there is a lot of slack to avoid line twist.
