Hi Folks,

I have been given the go ahead to buy my first fishing boat  (thanks hunny)- and I couldn't be more excited or nervous. I hope to be fishing in KS / MO  on Wyandotte, Shawnee and La Cygne  etc.  As boats go I have a small budget -  up to 8k all in and will be pulling it with a Kia Sorrento V6 awd (rated at 3000lbs).   Fishing wise - it will often be just me and maybe a plus 1,  although I'd like space to carry the dog and have somewhere for my wife to get a bit of sun!   The more comfort and storage the better.  I'm pretty certain I'm looking at an older boat. I have no preconceived ideas. Looking for your expert guidance here ?

Thanks in advance.

Lots to be had at that price point! Shop around and find a good deal. Make a list of everything you want your boat to have and then go shopping. I scoured the internet for 3 months before I found a deal I was satisfied with. Snagged this boat for just under $6000. Has a helix 10 and a helix 7 on it. Don't be afraid to drive for a good deal! Any questions shoot me a pm.

Your biggest concern is your tow vehicle.  I found these stats on a 2019 Kia.  Which one do you have?

  • Dynamax™ All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) System: There's certainly no better way to promote towing or performance. Not only will it give you the extra torque that you need to haul that heavy trailer or camper, but it'll also ensure that you're enjoying the smoothest ride, regardless of circumstances.
  • 2.4L 4-Cylinder Engine: 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.
  • 2.0L Turbocharged Engine: 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
  • 3.3L V6 AWD Engine: This is the monster that catapults you into the 5,000-pound towing range. After all, with 290 horsepower and 252 lb-ft of torque, how couldn't you manage to tow the world?

It's important not to overload your tow vehicle both for safety and longevity.  It's also important to have some towing add ons if it does not come so equipped.  Transmission cooler (easy aftermarket buy) upsized brakes if at the upper end of the tow range and the correct class hitch system.

Do you want glass or tin?  There are advantages and disadvantages of both.  You need to narrow down the field a little.

With your tow vehicle, go with a tin

Nice ride - thanks for the info.  I'm sure it will take me a few months to get my head around what I want!

I have the 3.3L v6 AWD... So that's a plus

I don't know if I want / need glass or tin.    Still reading and learning about the advantages of both. So much to consider!

didn't realize that it took me almost two years - what with that covid thing and moving house etc to finally pull the trigger. Oh that and a pension that I was completely unaware of came to be.

Picked up a 2018 Ranger RT188 in white this morning. Brand new trailer, Merc 115 with less than 30 hours on it. MK Ultrex  I-Pilot and Hummingbird Helix 10.  Pretty decent price too given the amount of money being asked for used boats right now.  Came of a local dealers lot and I couldn't be happier.
