I have been struggling with the shimano metanium mgl models in recent times I just got 2 brand new ones and the one I have been using more out of the 2 has of course once again started having a Geary feeling to it while retrieving my baits  back to the boat.. again this is a brand new reel out of the box ! What’s the issue here are they starting to make these things different seems like in the beginning these things had zero problems and I keep running into issues it’s a great reel it’s just when that smoothness is not there anymore and what’s the specifics on where to put oil in this thing ?

These specific reels are notorious for the "MGL Buzz". You can do 2 things. Return it. Put the Curado K gears in it and the buzz will go away. I didn't metnion re-lube it because that's just a band aid. The metanium gear set issue is a widley known problem over on TT. Some have it, some don't, some deal with it, some don't notice it.

Okay so it’s good to know I’m not the only one with the issue at least I just wanted to make sure I can continue to use it without it being a problem. For 420$ the mgl buzz shouldn’t be a thing lol

You aren't wrong there and definitely not alone. If I remember right, it has something to do /w the material of the pinion and main gear. I think the pinion is brass and the main gear is aluminium alloy or something along those lines. Dropping the Curado K gear set into them turns it into a butter smooth reel. Gear set is pretty cheap from shimano, too. Shame you have to do that to fix it, but for those that did it, it was 100% worth it.

Yea I mean I can live with it knowing it’s not a actual problem with the reel however that is tempting to do ?

Wow I had no clue these reels had those Issues. I love shimano but that's not acceptable at all for a reel that costly!

Have a 16 MGL XG and still waiting for the famous buzz......have bought the gear set and it still sets in the package unopened. You might want to try ZPI F-O Medium Grease like how it performs on the main and pinion gears.

And I believe Shimano recommends a  real heavy grease on the drive gear as in their ACT2 drag grease, and Cal's is the same thing. I use it in my Chronarch MGL.

All aluminum gears have that appear with usage from all reel manufacturers. I have used my Metanium MGLs for years and still feels great but I only use it for jigs and Texas rigs

So spend 400 on a reel then another 50 on a kit to make said reel perform as expected?  Not my cup of tea but if that floats your boat that's all that matters.  I have a few reels with aluminum gears and none make any type of buzz sound....nor did any cost 400 bucks.

People buy lightweight Mg framed reels with aluminum gears and expect them to “feel” like an 9oz aluminum reel with brass gears.

I used to do the Met MGL with the Curado gear swap.  Then I realized it weighed a few tenths of an ounce lighter than a Bantam MGL, I bought a JDM Bantam.

Do you prefer the bantum?

Just spend the $50 to for the kit off the tackle trap.  You get a new brass Metanium pinion and a Curado K main gear as well as a Curado K carbontex drag.  The Curado drag is needed to make the Curado gear work anyways.  You can send the reel and they will do the install if you want.

I just bought two of the Metanium Gear sets from the TackleTrap for the 7.3:1 Met MGL. It has fixed the loud gears/buzz, however now when I go to engage my reel and the thumbar raises into position, my reel skips a beat before catching and makes a second internal clicking sound inside the reel after the thumbar has raised. Very strange. I have taken it apart twice now yo try and diagnose the thumbar clutch system which seems to be working okay. My only observation that I thought may possibly be causing this is the drive gear and pinion gear I recieved from the Tackle Trap connect well unless the shaft that the drive gear revolves on is pushed away from the pinion. Any thoughts as to why this may be occuring? It's just very frustrating considering they're both essentially brand new, I now fixed the buzz, but it seems the new gear set has caused a new problem... any feedback would be awesome, thank!

Are you sure you seated the yoke properly.
