St Croix Bass X Rod

Any reviews on this rod? I know it's been out for awhile just wondering how its holding up for anyone who has one.

Decent rod for the money.  

If you can I'd move up one level to the Mojo though.

I own a Bass X that is excellent as a spinner bait  and heavy crankbaits rod.  They are over all decent rods depending on what you want to do with them.

Ya know, I used it for jigs quite a bit.  It will definitely do the job.  The tip on that rod let's it do a lot of thinks pretty well, but there are definitely lighter, better balanced, more sensitive, crisper rods out there for the $.  

 

It is still one of my favorite rods to use, but for me, a jig/trig rod needs to be where you should be the most picky.  I'd shoot for Mojo Bass, Tatula (new or old version).

 

The Bass X I have is the 7'4" MH mod fast btw.

I am sorry, but I laugh every time someone wants information about lower end rod and somebody chimes in with spend the extra $40, for the upgrade. Some of us are weekend anglers, college anglers, high school anglers or like me a working man. Not all of us have expensive bass boats, Shimano Metaniums, and a Rolex. Look we all know that a Lamborghini is going to blow the doors off a Camaro RS, but only a hand full of us can afford a Lamborghini. It's great that you spent the money for a fast car, but we have a pretty fast car too, just didn't spend half a million to get it!!! To each his own! 

 

My point is when somebody asks about a lower end product, simply answer the question about the product and save us the drivel about spending more money on something we didn't ask for. No need to thread jack. We've all had bad experiences with one company in the past. I'll never buy another Lucky Tackle Box. Just because it's lower end doesn't mean it's garbage. The Dobyns Colts are $79.99 and I'd put them against most higher end models. Ok, so I can't feel a small pebble that my Texas Rig just hit. Just get equipment that fits your budget and fish!!! Sorry, I've run into far too many of these posts. I think it's disrespectful. A Dobyns Colt and Shimano SLX caught this.

Totally agree and I'm in the same boat - fixed income and little to no spare for equipment. Get what you can afford, don't push yourself for equipment that's out of your reasonable budget.

Spend a little extra and get the MOJO it will be well worth it, if you have to save longer so be it.

I really enjoy my Bass X, and I also use the MH/F for jigs and Texas rigs. There are lighter rods, but for the price I think it's pretty darn good. I also have been throwing a baitcaster for 30 years, so slightly heavier rods are familiar to me.

If money is a concern, I would and have bought used rods that were two to three times the cost and got them at a deep discount. The rods were all in great shape. So looking for a high end rod at a $100 price point is doable. 

 

I have owned st croix Mojo and avid x rods. Good rods but sold them as I prefer my BPS Carbonite 2.0 rods. Check them out, they are at the same price point as the bass x, but nicer in my opinion.

I have the 6'10" ML Spinning model that I use for drop shotting, split shotting, and darter heads.  Very sensitive and a very light rod as well for the money.  Definitely recommend.

I picked up the 7'1" M spinning rod for my dad last Christmas and he loves that rod. Dobyns Fury is another solid choice at that price point and I think you'd be happy with either one of those.

I feel like, unless you are sponsored by a company, the freedom of choice is a blessing. You can't go wrong with either rod, both are solid companies.

If it feels right to you go for it. The Mojo Rod series doesn’t have much or anything over that rod. I own both along with many St. Croix Rods.  In that spinning series I have the Med. and ML X-Fast. My oldest grandson is fishing them primarily. Good quality, good warranty, great for soft plastics. These rods are not meant for lipped crankbaits. They are built for plastics. Might be a $100 rod but I would not call it a low end rod. There’s a lot of junk out there. Would not put it in that category.

Yep, I looked at the warranty which is 5 yrs I believe. I've also heard great things about the Bass X as a topwater/jerkbait rod in MXF. I loved the feel of the Bass X in MHF, it felt sensitive but it also felt like it had the backbone to pull in a good fish. I love my Dobyns Colt 704c, but it does lack sensitivity. I can never truly feel if a fish is on when I go weightless or Texas Rigged. I've missed some fish as a result.

I've got a St Croix Bass X bait casting rod.  I don't care for it.  I also have a St Croix Bass Mojo bait casting rod and a St Croix Premier casting rod which I much prefer.  I would not buy another Bass X. 

 

I'm not saying its garbage.  It's just not as good as the other St Croix rods I have.  The nice part about all St Croix rods is their warranty.

 

I don't have a Rolex.  I wear a Timex Ironman wrist watch.

Buy whatever you can afford and enjoy it.  I fished most of my teenage-30's with a daiwa Goldcast 80 and a Eagle Claw rod.  Whole combo probably wasn't more than $ 50.00 at the time and I caught a ton of fish with it.  My 1st "High End" for me rod was a Berkley Lightning Rod I bought back in the early 90's.  Thanks be to God, I can now afford more expensive gear but I had a ton of fun with my early stuff!

I’ve felt a few they seemed heavy and out of balance. For the same price you could get a Dobyns fury which is a much better rod IMO

But it's an inferior rod. I'm kidding. What are the specs? I'm looking for a MXF or MHF.

I have 2 bass x 7’1” mh casting rods. I like them a lot. I wish they put the bass x grip on the mojo. I catch as many on that rod as I do any other. No issues with them and I fish them hard.

You could say that Dobyns are whippy and are a power below what they should be. I own 4 Dobyns rods and the inferior Colts have caught more fish than the sought after Furys. In fact, the way Dobyns describes their rods is very confusing. Not to mention a Heavy (5 power) is really a Medium-Heavy.  Dobyns does not distribute their rods very well either. You have 733, 734, 735 and 705cb in the Fury line at Academy and Dick's, while St Croix is fully stocked at Bass Pro Shops. Dick's also has a nice selection of St. Croix. It's a convenience thing for some of us.

Originally, I wanted bass mojo Heavy but, bought the bassx instead. Bass pro didn’t have any H 7’4 or taller mojo’s at the time I was there. I bought a H 7ft4 bassx for pitching into Heavy slop. At first I didn’t care for but, I had a cheaper accurist reel on it abd it wasn’t up to the task of heavy pitching or flipping. Bought a better reel for it and now I like the rod a lot.  For me it’s a good heavy flipping pitching rod for 120 bucks and has a really fast tip. Only reason id get rid of it is to step up to a bass mojo or better rod.  I have other rod needs at the moment so it will be a while

I had one in hands it was tip heavy rod. I personally didn't like. If you looking for a rod around that price or less I would recommend the Falcon BuCoo can be picked up for around $70-80.
