Curado 50e Replacement

I was fishing a tournament this weekend, and I started to notice my Curado was all of sudden making these wicked bombing casts of like 50-60 yards, and every 3rd cast or so it would back lash severely. 

 

I hadn't changed anything, but never-the-less decided to tighten down the spool tension and engage another magnet. To my amazement it continued to get progressively worse no matter how much I cranked down the spool adjustment and magnets on this thing. Come to find out, after 10 glorious years, the magnets appear to be failing, and I'm in need of a replacement for my favorite reel of all time.

 

Does anyone who has fished with these incredible machines have recommendations for a similar reel that casts light lures well? I'd prefer to stay with Shimano, but I'm open to alternative suggestions as well. Not looking to spend more than $200.

Those reels are centrifugally braked.  No magnets. Sounds to me like a shim under the cast control cap or in the palm side plate has worn through. Easy fix. Call Shimano 877-577-0600.

Oops don’t seem you adjust spool tension already. You can get Curado 70 but that gonna be even wilder than 50e.

Thanks! If it doesn't mean buying a part worth more than a new reel then I'll be a happy guy!

Parts are bnt 2264 and 664. Cost is next to nothing. Six bucks shipping, though. I noticed that 2264 isn't listed but they should have it (maybe under a new part #). Keep your spool tension as loose as possible and they'll last a long time.

 

Edit: Be careful when you pull the spool bearing out of the brake side plate. That wire retainer likes to fly away. I hold one side with my thumb and pry it out with a tiny screwdriver. Wouldn't hurt to do it in the confines of a plastic bag. Good luck.

The 50 E is a pitching reel.  Making 50 or 60 yard casts, you're throwing out way over half the spool, more like 3/4 of spool capacity.   That's crazy.    Get the right tool for the job.  Get a 200 size Curado, or a Calcutta, and reel with increased spool capacity.  JMO

I have a few 51e that have lasted me quite some time and are still going strong. There is one that has been giving me trouble, purchased it used and original owner didn't disclose how messed up it was internally. 2 years later with off and on fixing and ordering parts, it's still not perfect. But I have ordered parts successfully through eReplacementparts and Shimano. Sometimes it takes a little longer from eReplacement as parts are back ordered. 

 

You'll be surprised when I suggest the SLX. It's a really nice reel for $100 bucks. Small, compact, fairly light, and performs very well. I'd compare performance to the 50e/51e series but more sturdy. If you want to stick with a smaller reel, I'd suggest you give the SLX a try. For 200 bucks, u can pickup 2 of them. Other than that, you have the Curado 70 and then the Chronarch MGL which is a little north of the price range.

Fix that 50E and keep it.  They are in demand right now on the net.  I have one and grandson has two and they are a sweeetheart of a reel.

The chronarch 50e was discontinued a few years after the curado e. They are the same reel, those parts might still be available. Worth a shot, great reels.

I say fix the 50e.  I had DVT put a 100mm Hawg Tech handle on, carbontex drag, Boca Orange bearings, and a 7 to 1 gear ratio from the 50 in mine.  There are pitching and flipping machines!!

I had the Chronarch 51e do the same to me a few years ago.  I had cleaned and lubed it each year but one year it started giving a back lash about every other cast.  I kept scratching my head as to what it could be....  I cleaned and lubed it again, same result. I replaced the brakes, same result.  Took it to a local guy to look it over and repair, he found nothing wrong with it.  But then....

 

As usually with stuff like this, it was something simple.  I found one of the pins that the brakes rest on was dull looking, sort of a worn appearance.  I oiled (very lightly with a swab) the pins and cleaned and lubed the inside brake frame.  It has worked great ever since.

If you can't get it fixed, I have a the Abu Garcia ALX (new version is the AL-F) and it is a fun little reel.  You can pick it on Amazon for about $200.  The only down side to this reel, is the finish.

I 2nd the shimano slx reel.  I've had several of the 50e reels and e5 and e7 series curados and chronarchs. The slx reminds me a lot of them in a smaller profile.  Also seems a little easier to control than those older curados. I have 3 and plan on adding several more. Actually just sold off all my daiwas and replaced them with these. I'm sure like has been mentioned tho urs is an easy fix. Good luck
