bassassasin260 Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 i read all of that earlier while doing a goggle search, and it looks like i need receipts for materials used to build the boat... im going to go to the dmv tomorrow and see what the deal is and then if i need receipts ill head to a place that sells aluminum and see if they can print me some fake receipts for a few bucks lol we will see how it all goes... screw all the other engines i found, i found THE one on craigslist, a 1980 johnson 25hp tiller with prop, running, for only 150$. so i need to move fast to make sure i can get it titled so i dont miss this deal. http://miami.craigslist.org/boa/672241987.html what a deal... another idea i just got was my buddy has a 12ft v nose jon boat that he doesnt want to ever register and i was thinking since he has a title i could get it all done and registered and just put the stickers and numbers on my boat and hope they dont ever check my vin... maybe even just swap vins... Low_Budget_Hooker Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Although this may be how some have gotten it done, we highly discourage against instructing members how to get away with something illegal. Â This is especially the case when what you are trying to do is easy enough to do legally. To get the numbers verified, simply call the state police and make the appointment. Â They even come to you, couldn't be any easier. Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 i talked to my budy that i bough it from. he said that he knew whos boat it was when he found it and he asked the guy and he told him that he cold have it, this was about 2 years ago. im afraid if i contact him he will want it back, does he deserve it back after giving it away? well, no. but legally he can just take it. will he just take it, probably not but after all the work i have in it, thats a risk i dont want to take. so the vin number is going to have to go. BadKarma42 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 I had a boat once and was in a situation similar to yours. Â Of course, your regs may be different than in PA. I bought the boat off of a guy. Â No papers, no registration. I called the place that does titles and registrations here and asked what I would need to do in order to get on the water legally. Â With no title, I would still be able to register the boat. Â However, if it was stolen I would be S.O.L. In order to get it registered, they told me to either bring the boat to them, or do a pencil tracing of the boat i.d. numbers (the deal where you put paper over something and lightly run the pencil over it so the image comes through). Hope this helps give you another idea. Â I'd hate for you to put all the time and money into the boat to have it confiscated or earn you a hefty fine or possibly cirminal charges. Quote

harshman Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Not to rain on your parade dude especially after all the hard work you put into the boat but try and do stuff the right way and get it titled legally. Forging a bill of sale and removing vin numbers would  work temporary but will royally screw you if you get caught. And who in their right mind is going to believe you built the boat in your garage. I'm sure you are very mechanically inclined by the work you have already done but come on the people you would have to convince that it is a home made boat weren't born yesterday. Fraud is a very serious crime. How would you feel if someone was trying to do this to a boat that once belonged to you. And not to call your friend a lier but he should have gotten the title from the dude that "gave" him the boat in the first place. Wouldn't blame the guy if he wants the boat back now after you made it awesome. Harshman Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 ok, i didnt take the vin off, i called around today and resaerched it and titleing a home made boat is a pain in the ***. im just going to bring it down tomaro, have the dmv run the vin number and see what they want me to do. that guy IS NOT GETTING IT BACK so today i traded my billy goat brush mower(was for sale for 200$) for a 25hp johnson and 150$, id say i got a good deal but i still havnt fired it yet, mechanically its 100%. the problem is i have to wire it since it was not a tiller model and it has no key or anything and its electric start. im going to make it a tiller... the only diff between the tiller is basically a handle since the gear shift is on the side of the motor, all i need is to make a custom handle and throw an old dirt bike twist grip on and im set. also, the shaft on this motor looks WAAAAAAY to long lol i guess its a 20" shaft which you guys say is ok but it seems to long to me, would the non tiller model have a 25" shaft or was that even an option? heres a few pics, it looks ridiculous if you ask me... Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 the motor runs! has a dirty carb and it wont run on anythign more than what i squirt in with a spray bottle since i dont have the gas tank hooked up but it runs! a 50$ engine and it runs. awesome... tomorrow ill pick up some anodes, an air filter, spark plugs and some bolts and nuts for the transom, then ill run it in a lake way back in the woods were there is no one to hassle me about it not being registered and see if i need to make the transom taller, i most likely will have to. i really wish tomorrow wasn't Saturday otherwise i would try and get it all registered and such because i want to run the thing in some real waters were i can go fish, not just run it in some crap hole lake way back in the woods at the wheelin spot. zuo Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 That motor looks huge! Â How much does it weigh? Â Is the boat even rated for a motor like that? Â Be careful out there... Quote
HPBB Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 that has to be way over the max HP and weight limit. I mean with that johnson sitting on the back ( I think those ones weigh wround 120lb) and your weight in the boat you are most likely at or over the max weight of the boat. forget about the extra weight of the decks. put 3 guys in that with the decks and that motor. I'll look for you on the 6 oclock news. did you get it registered yet? I bet that motor is over the max. look out you get stopped out there you looking for trouble. also that is a 20inch (long shaft) motor, you should have been looking for a 15inch short shaft one. If you do get it on the water. I would not go in shallow water with it. you will be hitting everything with that motor hanging down that low. and you stated that "THE GUY IS NOT GETTING IT BACK!" what if the guy you bought it from stole it from this other guy. if it is his and he has the tital and reg. its his. how would you feel if you boat went missing and then you found out a guy had. and said you not getting it back. man I bet this is your first boat? I know its fun, you can't wait to get out there and catch those hogs. but buddy you really jumped the gun. I would have made sure I got it registered and legal before I put any work or $$ into it. you did alot, but all could be for not. If the orginal owner wants it back. there is nothing you can do. also I do not know how the letter of the law works, but you might be charged with "recieving stolden property". get it registered legaly first. it will be better in the long run Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 9, 2008 Super User Posted June 9, 2008 What a wicked web we do weave. Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 relax guys, after selling the goped that came with the boat im at a grand total of around 30-50$, so if the motor is too long, weighs too much, overpowered, big deal, iv built the boat on the cheapest budget of anyone iv ever seen. so who care. i am going to get it registered properly on thursday when i get back from vacation... if someone who owned it insists on having it back, ill pay him for it, i dont care, iv put to much time in to give it up. Quote
Kimbro Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 What if that was a boat passed down in the family that he was to pass onto his son or daughter but some dirt bag stole it? Â What if you were in his shoes? Â Not trying to be a jerk but you really should have did the leg work prior to upgrading your jon. Â If the boat was stolen you could be charged with possession of stolen property. Â Again not trying to be a jerk but I think you may have gotten a little ahead of yourself. Â Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted June 11, 2008 Super User Posted June 11, 2008 This kid just doesn't care , he stated that twice in his last post. He could care less if it is some bodies boat. Quote
rondef Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 I agree, he should have made sure he had a clear title for the boat before doing any work to it. Â If it turns out to be stolen not only will he will loose the boat but he can be charged with possesion of stolen property. Â Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 11, 2008 Author Posted June 11, 2008 ok for the second time, the guy GAVE the boat to my friend with no title... Quote
gatorblazer Posted June 11, 2008 Posted June 11, 2008 Yeah, but that same guy "found" the boat floating somewhere. It wasnt his to give. And the defense of "i didnt know" will not work. Â Ignorance is NEVER a defense to an asst DA. Â He will argue that you knowingly accepted possession of an item that you knew had to have legal documention for. Â You not asking for legal documentaion that is REQUIRED by law is an admission that you "knew" the item was stolen or illegally obtained. Your emotionally attached to this thing and not thinking rationally about it. The likelyhood of the real owner pressing charges is pretty remote, as is your chances of registering it. This is no different than me giving you a truck that I was driving that I "found" out in the woods. Its still not legally mine, so I cant legally give it to you. Proceed with caution, be prepared to be smacked by the nutjobs at the courthouse, maybe get ready to pay the real owner (and I bet he will want more than you think it was worth when you got it) and dont do this again. Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 im workin on the registration. as for today, i built a real nice console for it since i found a throttle and steering box out at the wheelin spot the other day. ill post pics tomorow. Quote
rondef Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 What do you mean you found them? Â Were these taken from someones property without that person knowing? Â I am little concerned that you may not be obtaining these things legally. Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 no man, sorry i didnt explain myself better, i can see why i look like a thief lol. ok, i have a local spot out in the woods were we all go to wheel our trucks and take our 4 wheelers out. the place, like most wheelin spots, is a dump. people dump their old boats, cars, ect. its a bunch of garbage and only an idiot like myself would see it as treasure, but i get alot of great stuff out there. the boat it came off of has been siting out in the woods in pieces for as long as iv been going out there which is about 4 years, and im sure its been there longer judging by the shape its in. trust me guys, im not out to do anything illegal. im not that kind of guy. rondef Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Did you manage to get the boat registered yet? Quote
bassassasin260 Posted June 13, 2008 Author Posted June 13, 2008 Did you manage to get the boat registered yet? iv been doing lots of reading and it looks like i just need to go down and give my numbers and they will give me the guys phone number and address and instructions on how i need to have the title transfered to my name. so when i get the spare time ill run up to the dmv and get it taken care of. rondef Posted June 13, 2008 Posted June 13, 2008 Waht are you going to do if the guys says he wants his boat back and will not take no for an answer? Quote
