I am not trying to give you a hard time. I am just trying to see how you are making out with this situation.   You were the one that stated you are dealing with a stolen boat.

Reply #16 - Jun 4th, 2008, 10:17pm     i had no idea you had to be within spec of engine rating to get it registered? im going to have a huge prob registering it as the guy i got it from found it floating down the canal... so its as good as a stolen boat prety much. i need some help on registering it, i get a headache thinking about it, and now the motor has to be in spec too? i know for one thing florida is very cool about most laws, like for example we dont test for emissions and dont have limits on hp for our lakes and such so i think i wont have trouble with a big motor...

the boat does have a vin and it was last registered in 99. maybe sooner but the sticker was 99.

So you will pay him? Ok he wants $5,000. then what are you going to do?

Not really trying to give you a hard time, but your not listening. This site have alot of great guys & girls on it and integrity is #1 in most books, so all we want it to see you do this right, not the way your going at it.

you still don't understand the "jumping the gun", do you? your talking about putting a consoll and wheel, and cables and everything else in it. then you say "when I have the time I will try to get it registered" dude that should be #1, before you do any more work on it, get it legal. Is there a cap. plate on it? you know max weight, people, HP.

If not you will need that to before you get it registered.

we are not telling you that your wrong, just going about it the wrong way. we want to see you do it right. remember "integrity" get it regitered first.

I'll give you an example. think about this and how it would compare to you.

I think it was 3 maybe 4 years ago, at the lake my camp is on,Yough Dam, a very bad storm blew through. during the week, when most people are not there. the next moring my Dad went out fishing and found a boat drifting alone out in the lake. Not knowing who's it was, and if they were even there. He towed it back to our dock. Ran over to a local boat shop. right next to my camp. and told them what he had found. They called the boat and fish commission, ran the #'s and found out who's boat it was. called them and told them what had happen. They were very thankfull, and came down to the lake that evening ( they lived 2 hours away) at picked up the boat.

now acording to your story. When he found it floating, He could have given it to somebody, they could have sold it to somebody else. and that person owns it now?  think about it.

the boat he found? well, it wasn't a small jon, it was a 26-28 foot Crown Line with twin Vortec 350's.

just think about that for a while, and do it the right way. It will be better and easier in the end. we are not giving you a hard time to get on you. we just want to see you not get burnt in the end

who said im doing it the wrong way? im going to contact the real owner and get it titled in my name. i dont have a cap plate and im almost positive the boat never had one. it still has the vin and everything. lets be realistic, the guy isnt going to ask me to pay him 5,000$. i think hell just give it to me, if not id be wiling to pay up to 100$ if i had too.

You still don't get it. The owner may want it back and he has the right to take it back. You are powerless in your position. Do the right thing, stop working on the boat and contact the true owner about the fact that you have his boat. Maybe if you are lucky he will work something out with you but I wouldn't count on it. What makes you think the guy is just going to give you a free boat after he finds out what you have done? How do you know he is not reading this forum and trying to track you down right now. Man I would not want to be in your shoes if he calls the police and reports it stolen.

you guys aren't getting it. the guy gave the boat away, he doesn't care. im sure hell give me the title. now im sick of getting bashed here for nothing, i put alot of hard work into this boat and it really ticks me off when i com on here and see that all i get is a bunch of people telling me how stupid i am. no forum but this one has given me such a hard time. unless you have any decent advice on how i should go about registering it, dont post. i dont need you to post about how i should throw my hard work away and give the boat away.

You said it was a stolen boat. Quote-

"im going to have a huge prob registering it as the guy i got it from found it floating down the canal... so its as good as a stolen boat prety much."

I can promise you nobody here likes a theif. It is one thing to get on here and ask a question, but why in the world would you get on the world wide web and advertise that you have a stolen boat? You are either lying or you are down right retarded. I am almost positive you have already given anyone enough information to get you in serious trouble. You better pray the REAL owner doesn't read these forums. You really need to think about what you type. Good luck with "your" new boat.

you still do not get it. you are doing it the wrong way. you say "I am going to contact the real owner" that should be I am contacting the real owner.

and on the cap. plate. all boats have them.

IF he gave the boat away and doesn't care, whydidn't he give the title away with it too?

you guys are thick, i said its as good as a stolen boat because as far as the dmv knows, as it sits right now, it is no easyer than getting a stolen boat registered. im not a  i don't deserve to be accused as one. i dont care if the "real" owner is reading this or not, he GAVE the boat away, why would he try and claim it back, he has probably moved on to better things than a 14ft jon boat. the reason my buddy never asked for the title is becasue, well, hes not to smart. he thought it was no big deal becasue he never planed on registering it. to him it was just a little boat to have in the backyard(he lives on a canal) and you dont need registration with no motor. i wish hed have just asked the guy for the title tho.

this is my last post for defending myself. if im accused a thief again, ill just remove this thread.

thanks for trying to help.

im getting really sick of this. im on the florida sportsman forum and iv gotten nothing but compliments on my boat, and a cop who is helping me register it. he even contacted the ex owner for me. on this forum all you guys want to do is ***** and not give any help. if you dont want to help, than why in the world would you need to post?

btw, im finishing the boat tomorrow, ill test it and finds out for myself if it floats. id post pictures and everything but i dont think anyone really gives a crap on here so lets just let this thread die and we can all move on.

no forum but this one has given me such a hard time.

That is because no forum but this one also cares about the safety of others.  Think of other people besides your self for a second.

You don't OWN that boat unless you have the title.  If the title is still in the original guy's name, he still owns it.  I don't care who he gave it to.

I'm also worried about such a big motor on a small boat.  It's unsafe for you and others on the water.

First off, congrats on the phenomenal work on the boat Bassassasin. The work you have put in looks great. I think what everyone has been trying to say here is that since registration is essential, you could (and probably should have) taken care of it in the first place. From the situation you have described, the legality of that boat could certainly be brought into question. And no one wants to see you lose something you put such great work into, providing it is all done legal like. Not necessarily bashing you, just make sure it is legal.

Also, saying "no forum but this one has given me such a hard time" isn't exactly true. Over on that other forum, once the origins of the boat are brought into question, it appears their response is pretty much exactly the same. No one likes a thief, and everyone wants to make sure that you take the steps to safeguard yourself. At the same time, we're all a bunch of Redneck Brothers in this lifestyle we live, and I would hate to see ANYONE, be it a close friend or just someone I met at the dock this weekend have to deal with getting their stuff stolen. More than once I have been tempted to give the shirt off my back to help a fellow basser in need, and I have no doubt the majority of everyone else on here would do the same thing.  And I'm pretty confident THAT is where all the questions have come from on this board.

The boat does look great and hopefully it'll all work out.

well, actually on the Florida sportsman forum, i have a guy who's a noaa special agent or something like that, he ran my numbers for me, the boat didn't come back stolen, he also contacted the real owner for me. im going to call him tomorrow and ill get it all taken care of then.

i ran it today, and i honestly have to say i dont know what all the fiuss is about the 25hp, its no big deal, it didnt sink the boat at all. my only prob is that long shaft kills me, it wont plane becasue of it and goes sloooooow. so im building the transom tomorrow. i ran it in a private lake today so its legal to not be registered btw. the motor runs great tho, it strugles to push that useless 20" opf long shaft through the water tho, refuses to plane. it probly does about 18mph as it sits.

maybe i didnt mention it on this forum yet but incase i didnt, i spent the last few days making that console and steering and throttle setup. it all come out pretty good... it put me on some fish today.

wow thats gonna be a fricken sweet jon when its done. I was thinking the 25 would be way too heavy but maybe it isn't a 3 cylinder. I know on the new motors, 20hp is 2 cyl, and 25 is 3 so you add about 100lbs more weight. Nice work. And the console, wow! Impressive.

thanks for the compliment. it is a pretty sweet little boat, especialy on the budget iv built it on(around less than 100$), but it totaly sucks drgin that longshaft, but im gona make that transom 5" taller tomorrow, once thats done, and i get a tach for it and get the throttle done. then it will be an awesome boat.

o yea, it is a  2cylinder. its not a heavy engine for what it is at all. and for a 50$ engine it runs pretty sweet. starts up faster than my truck does lol

the boat is gonna boogie once i get the transom right.
