What makes ours dangerous is you can’t see them. Between the rolling hills and pines you typically hear it before you see it. Which is usually too late. I’ve been lucky to avoid a few by hauling butt after the sky immediately turned orange and got still. When it goes completely still and the birds are all gone you know to get the heck out of there Very true . We had one just miss us here in N fl. in the 90s. The sky just north and west of us had that terrible green and black look. It was dead calm at our house , nothing moving, no birds etc. but the lightning and scary clouds looked like it couldn’t possibly miss us but it did. I had to go that way a little while later and about a mile away the damage was bad. Pines snapped off, big oaks blown over and uprooted. I turned around and went home. Found out my daughters friend had a tree land on her house 1/2 mile from us. And I think it was only an f-1, or just a bad downburst. We normally don’t get the real monsters like the plains states. We just get hurricanes and lots of lightning!!? Y’all be safe out there! Quote
Super User Koz Posted May 28, 2019 Super User Posted May 28, 2019 At least with the hurricanes we have there is enough warning and we have time to get out. I was in the vicinity of a tornado once, in Crystal City (Arlington), VA of all places. IN the middle of the day the sky went pitch black. Not dark and gray mind you, but pitch black. Sensor driven parking lot and street lights came on. As it turns out, being in a city seemed to have helped as the tornado passed overhead instead of touching down. Still scary, though. Quote

Update: You should have seen the old man running for cover when those lightning bolts started falling. Heavy wind and rain with this one. Two inches in one hour, ground can't hold any more. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 29, 2019 Global Moderator Posted May 29, 2019 More than just rain rolling through tonight, a nearly mile wide tornado caused widespread destruction across NE Kansas, narrowly missed by my parents house by less than 2 miles and was headed straight towards my Father-in-law's house before it suddenly lifted. 1 Quote

Things were pretty tense here for a while. We were riding it out in the basement. Quite a bit of devastation southwest of us. Quote

Wow...just wow. Thankful they're safe, but thoughts and prayers to all weren't so fortunate. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 29, 2019 Super User Posted May 29, 2019 Well it got wild here last night. Got our softball games played and got home about 9:30. About 10:00 we started getting rain, then hail, then the winds started blowing like nothing I have ever experienced. We lost internet, TV and cell service. We had no idea what was going on. I got on my Fire radio and asked our 911 center if there were any tornadoes in the area. I was told just rain, hail and 60+ mph wind. All of the sudden we lost power and the hail was hitting the windows on the South side of my house and the North side. Our dept got paged out a short time later to monitor some downed power lines which were just about 1/2 mile away from my house. In total there were 7 poles snapped in half. We were without power from about 10:30 last night till about 11:20 this morning. I took a picture of my rain gauge at about midnight last night and had a touch over 2 inches. I emptied it and took a picture this morning about 11:45 and had almost an inch and a half. So we got about 3.5 inches in about 12 hours. I don't figure we had a tornado, but we had some serious straight line winds. Here is just one of the poles. Sorry, not sure why the pic is sideways. Quote
