Skeeloco Posted May 18, 2019 Posted May 18, 2019 I've been sampling quite a few different brand casting reels lately just to see what I like and what I don't. I picked up a Tatula 100 HSL a couple weeks ago, and it's got it's pluses and minuses. Let's focus on the minuses first. I get this really nasty kind of grinding/ rattling when casting lighter lures, anyone know what's up with that? Using 30lb braid. Also, I'm not sure what's up with the spool shaking and what they call "zero adjuster" (which just seems to be the spool tension knob). I primarily use casting reels for jerkbaits, so when I'm workin a jerkbait this thing just clicks like crazy since the spool is shaking and it's kind of driving me nuts. Is it possible to adjust it so the spool isn't clicking so much without sacrificing casting distance? Quote
Russ E Posted May 18, 2019 Posted May 18, 2019 I own 5 tatula reels. none of them make grinding or rattling noises. When you say spool shaking, is it side to side movement? While the suggested way to adjust spool tension is with a little side to side play. If the spool is too loose it can rattle a little. If tightening the tension knob slightly does not fix the problem, I would call diawa. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted May 18, 2019 Super User Posted May 18, 2019 Agree with Russ. Don't know about 'grinding', but the clicking is probably because the spool has excessive side-to-side play. I'd do as he suggested. Hope that is all it is for you. Bad reels can get out the door from any company. I'm sure Daiwa will take care of you if it is in fact a reel defect. My Tatulas have all been great. 1 Quote
LionHeart Posted May 19, 2019 Posted May 19, 2019 I have the same reel and throw 30 lb braid with no clicking, rattling, grinding, no nothing. I suspect you have a mechanical issue Sir. 2 Quote
ClintIsKING Posted May 19, 2019 Posted May 19, 2019 Just got a Tatula CT on Wednesday and its smooth as butter. Might have just got a faulty one which can happen with any company. I would contact Daiwa and I'm sure they'll help you out. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 19, 2019 Super User Posted May 19, 2019 There shouldn't more then a line thickness side to side play for any baitcasting reel. Adjust the know until the spool stops turning when the thumb bar release the spool with your lure then back off slowly until the lure starts fall on it's own weight with very slight drag, not free falling. The side to side spool movement should be minimal. If the reel doesn't cast easily and smoothly you either have too high of braking setting or dirty bearings. Spool clicking indicates it's way too lose. Tom 1 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted May 19, 2019 Super User Posted May 19, 2019 The "zero adjust" thing is just a spool tension knob. The reason Daiwa call it that is because they tell you to tighten it until there is almost no side to side play in the spool when casting, and then just leave it (hence "zero adjust"). All your adjustments after that should be with the magforce brakes. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted May 19, 2019 Posted May 19, 2019 I have that same reel and mine makes none of the noises you describe. Can you return it where you bought it for another one? Spool tension is set just right on these reels right out of the box for optimum performance. 1 Quote
Skeeloco Posted May 22, 2019 Author Posted May 22, 2019 Starting to wonder if the grinding noise when I cast is just because of wet braid and the style of the line guide in the reel. I took off the side plate and put a drop of oil on the spool bearing and it seemed fine when I first tested it out. But eventually the noise came back. I can't say I get this noise on my Lew's reel when casting. As far as the clicking, I've discovered it's the star drag making the noise. I have the drag pretty tight...is there just a little play to it as well? Quote
Gorris317 Posted May 22, 2019 Posted May 22, 2019 I just picked one of these up two days ago. The main gear was bone dry. Added a little grease and it is smooth and quiet. The only noise I notice is chatter while walking a frog. Kind of sounds like its side to side movement from the spool. Which is easily fixed, noise hasn't bothered me enough to fix it. Overall, I'm stoked about this reel. Quote
ResoKP Posted May 22, 2019 Posted May 22, 2019 Brand new Daiwa reels fresh out of the box don't have any side-to-side spool play. Your's could've been a return item that was resold to you or the box was opened in store for someone to "check out" and dials were played around with. Quote

Was set just the way I like it. 1 Quote

The new 100s are set that way from the factory. 22 hours ago, Skeeloco said: Where exactly is the "main gear" ? "Drive Gear" Quote
Skeeloco Posted May 26, 2019 Author Posted May 26, 2019 Welp here's the problem. Genius I bought it from had line strung through the holes as you can see. Snipped em out and she's castin perfecto. It still does rattle a bit more than my other casting reels but guess i can get used to it. Quote
Jaderose Posted May 26, 2019 Posted May 26, 2019 You could have said this was a used reel. Just sayin....... Quote
Skeeloco Posted June 19, 2019 Author Posted June 19, 2019 The grinding is back I think it's time to send it to Daiwa. They do however state that their one year warranty only extends to the original owner. While I did buy the reel in almost new condition I am not the original owner. Is there a way I could possibly get it repaired under warranty and not have to shell out $40 reel service fee? Seems the only want proof of purchase, would the UPC on the box be enough for this? They usually want a copy of the original receipt. UPC code does not prove it was purchased. If the warranty states it only applies to original owner. Then you have no warranty. Part of the gamble of buying used equipment. Quote
Gorris317 Posted June 20, 2019 Posted June 20, 2019 I sent my Tatula 100 in for service as well. I had a grinding issue and it was because the thumb bar was not fulling engaging when reeling. The second issue I had was the drag was not working. Even fully locked down I could pull line off by hand easily. Check the thumb bar and then just shell out the dough to get it fixed. Quote
txchaser Posted June 21, 2019 Posted June 21, 2019 One of my newish Tatula SV's sounds like it has ceramic bearings. Under-lubed from the factory? If so, where? Or should I just send it back. Works fine, just sounds grindy...really just like ceramics. Quote

Just picked up a Tatula SV two days ago and the thing sounds whisper quiet. I was also surprised with the casting distance on the reel. I can cast it about as far as my CT, but I have a lot more control over it. Quote
Skeeloco Posted June 21, 2019 Author Posted June 21, 2019 I sent it back, hopefully I can get it fixed without it costing me too much money (or none at all). I just don't like the grinding and it seems the spool has way too much wobble. Quote
