Can’t recommend this rod enough

I’ve used a lot of rods from different manufacturers but I found one that clearly separates itself from the others. It’s the Kistler KLX 6’9” MH mod-fast. I bought this rod specifically for squarebills and shallow cranks after struggling for years to find one that lived up to my expectations. The KLX rose to the challenge. I’ve been throwing it for several months now and can’t put it down. It’s super light and balanced weighing only 3.4 ounces. The tip is the perfect amount of softness and blends beautifully into a nice strong backbone. Fit and finish are also flawless. 

 

Its not not cheap (around $250) but if you are in the market for the perfect squarebill rod I cannot recommend this rod enough. It also handles medium cranks, topwater and jerkbaits extremely well.

I have the 7’8” and after bending it on a 5lb weight, I can see it’s rigid enough, but then bends very nicely under a load. Can’t wait to fish it. For my, non bass application, I need a crisp tip that once under a load, turns into a mod. Really seems like it’ll do that well. Only downside—on this big and heavy a rod, the guides should be much bigger. Doubt thats a problem on the 6’9”

Are you talking about the KLX Feel N Reel Series? Do you mean 6'8"? I can't find your exact rod on TWH.

I've had several incarnations of Kistler 6'9" MH baitcasters over the last decade and they always end up being my "swiss army knife" rod -- that is if I'm grabbing one rod for pond-hopping, etc, this is the one.  I've got the recent KLX and have no issues throwing topwater plugs, spinnerbaits/buzzbaits/chatterbaits, swimbaits and ever smaller jigs and t-rigged plastics on it.  I've even had great success throwing hollow-bodied frogs in slop.  To me, it's got more backbone than other crank rods which adds to it's versatility.

I took advantage of the Kistler 21% off sale (plus stacked another 10% off) a few weeks back and ordered my first two Kistler rods.

 

The first was a Helium 3 (7'1" med/heavy), which I've been able to use a few times. Using this for Texas rigs. The sensitivity on this thing is GREAT. Opening day the water was still quite cold. Was pitching a Lake Fork ring fry around some brush and felt this guy/girl barely pick it up.

 

 

The 2nd rod I ordered was a 7'2" KLX Fell N Reel for throwing cranks and maybe chatterbaits. That's been on back order but I see it has shipped the other day so I should be getting it soon.

 

Trey (Kistler owner) is a great guy and super easy to talk to.

TW is the first place I often check when looking up specific rods.  However, as you noted, they don't always carry every model in a line of rods.  The rod company's website is the next place I hit.

I fish Kistler exclusively (guilty of being a brand loyalist). I started with the Magnesium 2 as it was recommended to me for a jig rod. I was really impressed with the way it balances and lightness of the rod. Now I have rods from every line including the new Argon line which is by far the best sub $250 rod I have ever fished. I'm glad there are more people out there using these rods. I seem to be the only one in my neck of the woods.

I've got several Kistler's (8-10). My favorite for spinner baits is the MH 6'10" mag2. I'm chunking 1/2 oz double willow leaf. The KLX feel & reel S2 (glass/graphite) hybrids are excellent for deep diving cranks too.

Hey Kistler loyalist. Do you happen to have the Magnesium 2 Medium 7' casting rod? I just got a Helium3 and love it.

I do not. The only Mag 2 rod I still have is the 7'3" HMH for jigs. For Medium powered I generally use the KLX Feel N Reel since most applications using a Med power is moving baits for me.
