First of all, I have not used any of my spinning reel for so long.

I took out my Shimano sahara 750FB pre fishing to get ready for new Ultralight rod that I ordered for panfish. Low and behold it started binding, I looked around and found a big goop of something black and messy like grease. At home I opened the reel up, cleaned up all black mess (I thought it was old grease, I have not cleaned this reel for long long time) turn out it was Friction ring that melted ???. I checked grease on pinion gear and it still yellow, clear and not dry up.

Now I put the reel back together, tried closing the bail manually and with turning handle, it seems the reel still works just usual. I checked website for Friction ring and compare image to my Shimano symetre FL and it is not the same. (Symetre Friction ring got groove but Sahara just smooth like regular o-ring)

My question is do I need this Friction ring, I know Friction ring on symetre help prevent the bail to close itself when hard cast, but on Sahara will be use for only 1/32-1/16oz jig head. If I still need it where can I buy it part#7845.

Being an older reel I bet that part is no longer available from shimano. Some of the other online parts suppliers may have it.

Check I see if some of the 1000 size share similar parts. The 750 and 1000 size are pretty close and may share the same parts. Look for a similar frame style.

I had a 1500 size jdm shimano reel and my friction ring went bad. I was able to replace it with a 1000 size ring. Worked like new again.

E Replacement parts has it. I would just fish the reel if it isn't causing any problems. This was a real problem with older Shimanos.

The subject of finding parts for older Shimano reels came up in the Daiwa vs Lew's thread in this forum.

This was the site that was recommended by @WRB for getting older Shimano parts: http://www.reel-ex.com/

They are closed until June 1st however.

Friction ring in Shimano spinning reels has been a long time issue.  Many people just pull them out and carry on.

Once the friction rings failed on reels without replacement parts, I took them off, then disabled the bail trip mechanism.

Which reel? I can see it happen with symetre FL?  But Sahara FB still work. I do close bail manually anyway.

Happened on my saharas also, all 3 of my saharas. Removed it and was fine, although every once in a while my bail would close. Wo t buy saharas now because of that

This is how I temporarily fix mine, if anyone care. Without friction ring even it work but once a while the bail still close on hard cast. Luckily I use 1/20oz jig head imagine if this 1/4oz, i’d Lost lures left and right. I know some online have part but will cost me 6 bucks for shipping. I’m cheap lol.
