Hitting thumb bar when I set the hook (Quantum Smoke Speed Freak)

So I have been using a Smoke Speed Freak lately and I am finding that pretty often when I go to set a hook I hear the gears grind where part of my palm pushed onto the thumb bar. I have never done this before this reel. The thumb bar is very close to the side of the reel where your palm rests. I am just wondering if anyone else has noticed this being an issue for them with this reel? I love the reel but at this point I am thinking I want to find something I can use it for that does not require any hook setting.

I've never used that reel or had that problem. I would suggest unloading it or using it for baits you reel set with, like squarebills and lipless crankbaits, if it's causing you such a headache.

I've never come close to hitting the thumbar when setting a hook...mainly because I don't palm my reel.

Only my ring finger is behind the trigger, but I have fished like that for years and this is the only reel I have ever had this happen with, which is why I think its due to placement of the thumbbar. For example on my Chronarch the button is moved over to the side and I have never done this. Its an odd issue and I feel stupid having it tbh haha but I just wanted to see if others had had the issue as well

The ergonomics of some reels can cause that and some other issues when casting and/or fishing at times. The options are use a different reel, or change the way you fish. I am freakishly sensitive to the ergonomics of most of my sporting equipment (I'm sure some of it is in my head), from my fishing stuff, my dive gear, my bikes, and my tennis rackets. I envy folks who just don't see or care about a difference, but not really.

hahaha yea I wish i was like that! I am so used to my other stuff I think i just need to switch over to all the same reels then I would be happy

Im with you. I use the same brand and line of rods and the same spinning and baitcasting reels, just in different sizes.

 

I want the muscle memory and feel, to be about the same. Plus, it looks like you are organized, when you jump into someones boat for the first time.
