I.ve read where some guys use a glass bead (i.e. 6 or 6mm ?) in front of a toad ? I suppose this is to keep weeds or scum off the front or for some other reason ?

Does anyone use toads for river smallmouth? I have thought about it but haven't pulled the trigger on any yet.

@Junger showed me a way to rig them with a single bead and a tri-bead to make like a nose cone in-front of the toad.  It worked very well to keep off weeds and to protect the plastic from ripping off the hook.

Yeah, bobber stop -> 10mm round bead -> 10mm tri-bead -> hook. The big round bead helps deflect stems of spatterdock/grass. Point your rod tip at the lure, and reel in straight.
