Favorite Top Water Toad ?

What is your favorite top water toad to throw and what do you like about it ? ...Also , what colors do you use , along with hook , line , rod & reel set up ? Thanks in advance - I've never thrown a toad before and would like to give it a try first by itself and then maybe try it on a buzz bait in the future .

I've only used two, Bass Pro Shops' version and the Stanley Ribbit.  I don't know if the BPS toad I had is made anymore, but it worked great, and was pretty tough.  I bought them years ago and didn't try them much until a two years ago.  The Ribbits also work great for me, but they are a lot less durable than the BPS ones I had, and way more expensive.  I just bought some Yum Tip Toads in black, we'll see how they work in comparison.

 

I just use a EWG worm hook and don't have many failed hookups.

 

Definitely try them; I love topwater soft plastics, and even use some that aren't intended to be on top, but work them that way anyway.  This is a great option when they are a little too finicky to hit a big popper, prop bait, or buzzbait.

I generally stick with black or white or whatever color is on sale, I don't think it makes that much difference.

*OP here : It looks like having Black , Green Pumpkin and Pearl White would cover most situations ... What dictates which color you choose ? Is it more of a silhouette against the sky than a water color type consideration ?

For me it's the big bite baits top toad. What I like about it is it's got a flat wider body than most and  stiffer plastic that makes it skip.really well. Also that it has outward facing feet that cut a wider swath  than others. For colors I like watermelon/pearl and chartreuse junebug swirl. 4 or5/0 grip pin hook on 30-40 lb. Braid.

YUM Tip Toad. Good action and durability, plus much more affordable than most others. Black and white are the only 2 colors I hardly ever fish. 7' H/F 7.3 reel, 50lb braid, 4/0 EWG Eagle Claw with a centering pin screwlock.

*The Yum Tip Toad is definitely on my short list to try ! ... Today I visited a local Academy and bought the Zoom Horny Toad (Black , White , WM Red and Bull Frog)  and Owner CPS Twist Lock XXX 5/0 Hooks . At home on deck I have a Dobyns Sierra 734c. a 6:4:1 and 7:5:1 Daiwa reels (not sure which to use ?) and a full spool of dark green Power Pro #30 lb. braid ... My highland reservoirs and smaller lakes have sparse grass , eel weed , pads , etc. more of an open water deal or else I'd jump up to #50 lb. braid . ... Only thing left to do is fan cast and cover water !

My favorite is the keitech noisy flapper.

 

Right now, there is a shad spawn going on at my lake so I'm throwing white or something with a silver streak

For the most part I will throw something dark colored the rest of the year.

 

While testing action in a pool on some hand poured baits and observing from underwater, the darker colored baits seem to give off a bigger profile IMO

 

Sometimes my strikes will come in open water right over a darker or lighter spot on the bottom

Which gives me confidence on my lake with that has almost 0 weed growth

Another vote for the Keitech Noisy Flapper.  Up until a few days ago, this was the bait that caught my PB.

Tie between keitech noise flapper and stanley ribbit here. Flapper is bigger and seems to run upright better than the ribbit  but is not as noisy. I prefer to rig them on the Stanley double take hooks. Skips and casts amazingly well on a heavy rod.

 

Ribbit tends to tear and slide down the hook after a single catch but I put up with it because it gets bit. It’s my go to sight fishing lure. Snakeheads love these things. Definitely get mend it though.

 

I have not found color to matter. I’ve caught equally well on natural bullfrog, black, white and pink.

Stanley Top Toad!   Has a lot of commotion on the surface, plus you can pause it and it floats on a spot.  Bought a dozen bags for $2.50 each.

I'm a fan. I've probably caught more fish with a black Cane Toad than I have any other toad regardless of color. 

I like Rage Toads too but those legs get ripped pretty easily.

Do most who fish a toad  feel a 7:5:1 or faster reel is pretty much mandatory ?

No, but helps. Just like you can easily fish a jig on a 6.2:1 ratio reel, just isn't the best tool for the job. Something about frogs and toads, fish really seem to take off when they eat them and when you hook them, so a fast reel helps a lot in keeping them stuck.

Not me. I was fishing mine with a 5.4 before it went to the bottom. Now I use a 6.3. And even with the 5.4 I 've had countless fish bust thru 6 or 8 inches behind the bait striking where it was .
