Best way to Selfie

I struggle to take a good picture of a good bass when I'm alone. What is your go to way of getting a good picture alone? Just phone btw, no gopro.

If there's a tree nearby you can lean the phone against it and put the camera on a three second delay; then just step back and hold the fish up and you'll get a good picture.

Excuse me for my ignorance but I dont have a smart phone , I use a tracfone . Does your phone  have a timer ?

Most smart phones have a 3 and 10 second timer.  I use a RAM X-mount and the 3 second timer, or just take an arm's length selfie.

I wonder how many cellphones sit at the bottom of lakes. It's just wrong that cellphones don't come with a place to attach a wrist strap or lanyard. If you want to rig something up, google: "How I Made a Mobile Phone Neck Strap Lanyard Case for $6".

 

It would also be nice if the shutter was voice-activated. I guess maybe they are on better phones, but I've got an el-cheapo.

 

As far as taking the picture, I've found that fish always look more like their real size when the camera is level with the center of the fish, and the fish looks smallest when the camera is level with the head of the fish. I usually take two pictures - one selfie, and one shot of the fish itself.

Catch smaller fish. Those should fit in the frame easier for you. Or at least that works for me.

I just put my fish by my face, almost touching it, reach out as far as I can, and snap.  As mentioned, having the camera level with the fish helps you scale the size with your body parts.  If you put the camera too far below the fish, it makes it seem much larger.  That said, I really don't care how the fish looks size-wise.  I just want it to be a nice photo with good lighting and color, no glare.

I'm not trying to impress anyone with my pics, in fact I rarely share them at all. I try to get an accurate picture of the size because I don't have scales and the picture serves as part of my record keeping. Even when I finally break down and get some scales, the pictures will still be an important part of my records.

I just hold it at arm's length. I don't have a 'cheapie'...but it is woefully out of date. Galaxy S-4...it still works so I still have it. That's what my current profile pic was taken with.

If it's a fish you really want a nice picture of when you're alone you need to use a proper tri-pod and be ready to take A LOT of pictures. It's a pain but worth it imo.  The picture in my avi was done this way.

These days you can buy a mount to put your phone in and attach it to the tripod.  I also carry an old point and shoot (5MP) with me but the cameras on current phones are pretty incredible.

There isn’t a good way, plain and simple. The solution? Have someone else take the photo or lay the fish on a measuring board and take a photo. Selfies are the worst. I’d honestly rather just not even do it

In my kayak I've got a ram mount and just put it on a timer, from the bank I just take a regular selfie.

If I take a selfie, I also take one of the fish against a ruler taped to my boat. That way there is no question in my mind when looking through my pic library as to how big the fish actually was.

Flip the screen around and hold it arms length. Even with my short arms I can manage to get a pretty good sized fish in the shot.

I mostly just lay mine on the ground next to my rod for size reference. Gotta move fast, though.

I never lay them on the ground. It's not going to kill them, but it can't be good for them.

 

I do use my rod for a ruler though. The logo on mine is 24" from the base.

Yeah guys I do know to turn my phone around. And yes to the timer as well. But I like to get a good pic with the bass horizontal and all of him in the Pic. That's just me tho...

Keyocera DuraForce Pro 2. I had this phone, it's a smartphone but isn't as refined and feature packed as most phones but I did drop it off my roof on to my driveway, ran it over with my lawn mower and dropped it into my lake (sat in the lake overnight about 4') and still worked and nothing was broken. It did have to sit in rice for 3 days to dry out. But the phone is made to not break and it has a slot in the corner to add a wrist strap or lanyard. I only got rid of it because the internals only have a 3 year life span.

That's my great fear in life - catching a double digit bass and no one around to record it (/sarcasm).

 

I guess I've been lucky enough to be fishing with someone or someone is passing by and is willing to take a photo. I guess that if the situation arises I'll try and take a selfie, but I imagine that trying to take a selfie holding a 7+ pound bass is a pain in the rump.

If you have an IPhone and an Apple Watch like I do it makes picture taking easier. You can use the watch to take a pic or set up a 3 sec timer.
