ckherring92 Posted May 13, 2019 Posted May 13, 2019 Hello everyone, Has anyone heard anymore or have any info about the panfish rod that Dobyns is supposedly making for there colt series lineup? I've seen it vaguely mentioned in a couple articles such as the one linked here https://www.westernbass.com/article/colt-series-no-matter-technique-you-fishing-dobyns I recently picked up my first dobyns fury rod and love it and would be very interested in a panfish rod of the same quality -chandler Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 While your waiting for dobyns to come out with one I use a Zebco Omega panfish setups. This one has 6lb Trilene XL and can handle big fish when needed to. Highly recommend, when dobyns does finally come out with a panfishing rod, like you I want to try one out! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 14, 2019 Super User Posted May 14, 2019 If it's a spinning rod, another one to check out while waiting for the Dobyns would be what I have, Diawa Spinmatic. A model with nothing but UL rods ranging from 4' to 8'. It's very light, very responsive and if I upgraded it would probably be to a Diawa Presso...another model that's UL only. Quote
greentrout Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 Lew's carries Wally Marshall Crappie rods ... should do the trick for bull bream and shell crackers, too... but you can go to other sources and buy a good med. light that will do the trick also ... i use a medium when casting some distance with a float ... good fishing ... Super User WRB Posted May 14, 2019 Super User Posted May 14, 2019 Robyn's isn't a multi specie rod company, they are focused on bass fishing. I believe the lightest power rod offered is a 2 /ML. Tom Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 @greentrout that's the ZO2 model, just a step up from the micro, all I have is positive things to say about it! Quote
Brad Reid Posted May 14, 2019 Posted May 14, 2019 I'll just add that I own two rods from the St. Croix Panfish series. My little 5 footer makes for a fun match against big bull bluegills. The rod handles them well including the occasional 2 or 3 lbs. bass that jumps aboard thinking of my tiny jigs/plastics as "snacks" I guess. And, I have the longer 6'9" St. Croix Panfish rod for more casting distance. I use it much less frequently since I fish from a kayak or canoe a lot, float up closer to my intended targets. Both rods are great. As nice as these St. Croix rods are, neither is even remotely close to my rather high-end Shimano Soare XTune S706UL-T rod. Its 7'6" length is a contributing factor for long casts, its hand grip is the best of any rod I own, workmanship/detail off the charts. I bought it slightly used from Rob, a member and occasional poster here, who takes exceptional care of his equipment. Brad 1 Quote

I've been on the fence on buying either the 5-1/2 -6ft ul or the 6ft 4 light from their panfish series. But then the dobyns rumour came across my plate so I may delay the st.croix for a bit. I aswell will be doing some kayak fishing this year so I'm trying to stay compact to a certain extent. 1 Quote
ckherring92 Posted May 14, 2019 Author Posted May 14, 2019 Update... I inquired on the dobyns website. See their response below. No solid timeframe yet tho unfortunately. 2 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 18, 2019 Super User Posted May 18, 2019 I’ve heard good thing about St Croix panfish series and might got one in near future. Be careful not all UL rod act the same. I just got Shimano Sensilite UL 6’6 1/32-3/16, this rod UL alright but more like Bass UL rod not panfish, a lot of backbone with just enough softer tip, I doubt it would handle lowest rating. I do have Daiwa spinmatic 7’ UL which is pretty much noodle but cast well for light lure and if set drag properly can handle big fish as well. Im kind of not so happy with sensilite since my other rod M power 1/8-3/8 can handle the same lure (1/20oz + 2” plastic ~2.3grams) and got pretty much same distance. Quote

ckherring92 Posted June 28, 2019 Author Posted June 28, 2019 UPDATE: Dobyns has realesed the rod, note: i had to order direct from dobyns by calling and placing the order over the phone. No details on website at the moment. Specs: Dobyns Colt 601SF 6ft long "light" panfish taper 2-8lb 1/16-5/16 lure rating approx 100g (per food scale i own) retails for 80$ + shipping only option available at this time when speaking with them on the phone the ratings were geared toward the bigger spectrum of panfish which isnt totally uncommon, but it doesnt feel quite like the ultralight i thought it would be. While it has a good bit of flex it has a sturdy backbone. I threw on a hook with a troutmagnet soft bait aswell as a crappiemagnet bait. Both had decent distance, its comfortable in the hand tho i wish it was a bit lighter. I paired it with my Tatula LT 1000 and the balance felt great just forward of the reel seat. Feels like a middle of the road rod where if i was to get a bluegill it would still be fun but i wouldnt be worried if a smaller cat or a bass grabbed on for a ride. im hoping to get it on the water this weekend, but if not i have a trip planned for the 4th of july that will put it through some paces. Hope this is of use for somebody as im a bit of a ginnie pig at this point with so little info out there. If anyone is thinking of buying this rod, please feel free to ask any questions as i have it in hand. just let me know shout out to dobyns for shipping this rod great, came in hard carboard tube and then incrementally bubble wrapped, best ive seen so far - Chandler 1 Quote
Hooty Posted November 13, 2021 Posted November 13, 2021 What are your thoughts on the Dobyns Colt panfish rod now that you have had it for a while? I am thinking about getting one for a dedicated panfish setup. Quote

Only downside is it’s length makes long casts difficult, but it’s worked fine for what I use it for. Mostly used to soak live worms or minnows but good with a beetle spin as well. It has handled 1.5-2 lb bass on 6# mono. Almost all my rods are Dobyns so I’m biased but I would buy another on these if I ever need to. 1 Quote
