Jhodge4719 Posted May 11, 2019 Posted May 11, 2019 Hi everyone I was recently looking online for some reels and noticed that the shimano rear drag spirex the light blue ones is being priced for insane amounts of money for a reel that originally costed 60 bucks.does anyone know why these reels are being priced for so much? Super User MN Fisher Posted May 11, 2019 Super User Posted May 11, 2019 It's now a 'classic' as it's not made anymore. With quantities limited to what's in circulation, people ask insane prices...and other people will pay them. Quote

This is the best spinner anywhere near this price. A smooth drag like the Spirex is unheard of in a spinner under $300. And it’s a baitrunner if you get the rear drag. Plus it’s light, too. Quote

Almost 300 is what they are going for now I paid 60 new in box for mine I guess that's why it seems so strange to me and it is probably one of the best reels I have ever used i love the rear drag so much that all my spinners are rear drag but one Quote

There really aren’t any other quality mini baitrunners. My kids use them. They work just as good in salt as they do in freshwater. The drag is as good as it gets for a small spinner. I don’t see how anyone would ever consider selling one, no matter what they cost. Quote

There are some good smaller bait runner reels out there too like the Penn Fierce and Okuma. I haven't used it but i also know KastKing makes one as well. They are definitely out there. Quote

I wasn't for sure on the bait runner feature on this reel but when I looked at it it does a switch on top of the main drag that puts just enough tension for something to run off with bait but I'm still unsure what that's for tho 2 minutes ago, fvogel67 said: TackleDirect This might be the same one I seen and when I read the description at the bottom it described it as front drag even tho it's showing rear drag in photo I could be wrong I did see one like that tho I know all the ones on ebay are going for close to that same amount in the photo I shared and cannot be found on any other website that I have searched it puzzles me Quote

The Spirex Rear Drag is a Rear Drag and has a lever that works just like a Baitrunner, except instead of sliding up and down it moves side to side. Quote

Yea that's exactly what I was talking about I have used for bait runner purpose and did what I expected it to do so I assumed that what it was for myself Quote

Being able to increase the drag isn't the same as a bait runner but whatever works for you is what matters. Quote

Because they are better than reels that were always $300 and there is nothing that makes a $300 spinner better than a Spirex, except the price. Quote
keagbassr Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 The lever on the rear is referred to as the fighting drag ( have it on my rear drag symetres) as it allows you to set the drag as you like it [say 10 lbs.] And and then adjust on the fly when fighting a fish and being able to maintain the setting by returning the lever to center. Heartland Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 I once caught a humpback whale on a spirex.... would have landed it too if it weren't for those meddling kids and their dog. Quote

Actually that makes better sense than a bait runner and actually pretty cool it has this feature Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted May 12, 2019 Posted May 12, 2019 I'll sell mine for $200, slightly used. I think $60 was about right for this reel. It's heavy, and it's not for everyone. I don't mind the fact that the bail will turn almost a turn before the auto-reverse kicks in, but the rear drag is different from everything else, so when I do use it (not often), I have to remember where everything is. But at $300, I'm thinking a Stradic or something with money to boot....crazy. 1 Quote
