bunz559 Posted May 8, 2019 Posted May 8, 2019 I have a Curado 51e that I purchased used awhile back and have been piecing parts to restore it. I've replaced the drive gear, pinion gear, the most common bearings along with the shaft bearing. I've cleaned and lubed everything. The reel retrieves fine and everything seems to work as it should when a fish is hooked on. There is one problem, when I cast, the reel makes a terrible noise that has a slight vibration. Casting distance doesn't seem affected, but this noise definitely doesn't sound right. It's not a clicking sound like some folks have with the thumb bar when casting. It sounds like the brakes, or spool, are rubbing against something making a rough noise when casting. It starts loud during the initial cast and dissipates as the spool slows down/stops. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should take a look at or replace? I'd greatly appreciate it. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted May 8, 2019 Super User Posted May 8, 2019 Check the pin on the spool shaft and make sure it is straight. 1 Quote

Super User OkobojiEagle Posted May 8, 2019 Super User Posted May 8, 2019 Mine would squeal some when the drum around the plastic brakes would get dry... one drop of oil on a q'tip run around it would fix the problem. oe 2 Quote

craww Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 Everytime I've had a reel screech like that it was a bearing. If you have another shimano I'd swap them and see if it stops since it only takes 30 seconds or so. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 10, 2019 Posted May 10, 2019 Screeching noises attributed to bearings is more often brakes. Make sure the drum is clean and apply a light film of light oil. Also make sure that one of the brake pins didn’t come loose from the hub and hitting the drum. Ceramic bearings have a sound but shouldn’t vibrate. IMO the “noise” of them is blown out of proportion. 1 Quote

But it wouldn't hurt to try. Process of elimination could save guessing and some money ordering parts that aren't affected. Thanks! 13 hours ago, Delaware Valley Tackle said: Screeching noises attributed to bearings is more often brakes. Make sure the drum is clean and apply a light film of light oil. I could agree. I have quite a few reels with Boca ceramic bearings and while they're slightly noisier, they're not terribly bad. Thanks much for your input, I'll definitely check the brake pins. I know I gave this thing a nice clean and hit all the regular spots with some oil and lube. If it were the brake pins, what is your suggestion? Can I order just that part? Doesn't look like the spool assembly can be purchased separately except the brake collars. I swear, the more I invest into fixing this darn reel, I could've purchased something new. LOL! Someone really screwed me with this one. Quote
bunz559 Posted May 30, 2019 Author Posted May 30, 2019 Sound has been fixed! Thanks for all the input folks! I replace the yoke, yoke springs, and the pinion gear bearing. Quote

Interesting, because none of the parts you listed have any effect on casting, that part of the reel is disengaged during casting. If they were failing to disengage properly you would have experienced a significant loss of distance during casting. Quote

I forgot to mention, I did change out the brake collars as well since I have extras from other reels. Not sure if that helped, but between those changes, the reel is quiet again. Quote

Glad you were able to resolve the issue. The brake drum is the metal ring inside the palm side plate, the brake tabs are the small plastic pieces that are on the end of the brake pins and provide the braking force. 1 Quote
