So I am in the market for a jig rod. I am looking at one to pitch 3/8 to 1/2 oz jigs plus the weight of the trailer around into cover or sometimes use over points. I want a sierra rod. I was looking at the 704 or the 734. Which would you recommend?

734 if you are going to stick to 3/8oz the majority of the time 735 if you plan to use 1/2 oz more.

i love my 734 paired with a 3/8 jig and pig but it is a little light for a 1/2 oz in cover. dobyns run light

hmm i already have 2 735 in the Fury line. Maybe I should just stick to that then. I have one for carolina rig and one for football jigs, but I felt like the 735 was to much for up close pitching with the stiffer tip.

I own 4 Dobyns fury rods.

a 705cb. this is my dedicated diving crankbait rod.

a  733c. this is used for flukes and weightless stickbaits

a 734c. this is my all around pitching rod. usually texas rigged pit boss or brush hog. in relatively light cover. It also occasionally gets used for carolina rigs.

a 735c  this is my heavy cover flipping/pitching jig rod.

*Nice Dobyns rods  set up ! ... The 705cb & 703c would be of interest as I have a 734c & 735c already . You reminded me I need to check those out .

I have the Sierra 703, 734 and 735. 734 is basically a good light jig and Texas rig rod. I’ve pitched in pads but I would only throw the 735 in HEAVY cover like lay downs. I also use it for a frog rod and it’s perfect for that.703 is great like mentioned for flukes, senkos, lipless and chatterbaits. The 734 boded well for spinner baits and little glide baits too. Been using mine all year and so far I’ve pretty much stuck to what was recommended on dobyns website. I wanna check out a crankbait rod but I threw kvd squarebills on my 703 and had great success. 1.5. I believe that rod can do it. It’s pmeasily my favorite

I have a Champion 703, 734 and 735. I usually stick to around 3/8 ounce jigs with trailers on the 734. It could go higher but especially when throwing into cover I would jump up to the 735. I don't feel like the 734 has enough power to pull a bass out of a laydown for example. Also I just realized that we live quite close to one another.

You want the 735 for your purposes. But you'd be amazed at what all you can do with that 734C.

I second this^

I use my DX 705c for 3/8 and up Jigs, works great.

I got my oldest son a Dobyns Sierra 704C for his birthday last year. He likes fishing with soft plastics, but it also makes a very good rod for jigs up to 1/2oz in lighter cover. It has a pretty good tip.

You might prefer the heavier 705C or 735C for jigs, especially if you are planning on running heavy braid and throwing them in cover.

Dobyn's has a Champion 744 that is a "jig rod special".  I dont have it but plan on getting one soon. Have heard nothing but good things so far.

*It is great to hear you are having success with the 703c. for 1.5 KVD square bills but  also being able to switch over to Senkos or Flukes makes the 703c. sound extra versatile !

I have a Dobyns 734 XP, 744 Extreme, 735 Fury, and 745 Extreme. If you're looking to pitch and throw jigs of most weights, I'd suggest the 745 or the 735 in the XP. It's a stout rod, perfect for light and heavy cover. I've used my 745 Extreme and Fury to pitch anything from 3/16 - 1/2oz Texas rigs and also as a jig rod throwing jigs 3/8 - 3/4oz. It's a fairly versatile rod when it comes to Texas rigs, pitching/flipping and throwing jigs.

As for the 4 power rods, they've got a lot more flex in the tip. There's definitely plenty of backbone, but the tip wouldn't be my choice for pitching. 4 powers may be ok for open water jigging like in California reservoirs that I fish in. Even then, I still prefer my 5 power Dobyns.

I typically line up my 4 powers with spinner baits, chatterbaits, super spooks, and buzz baits because the tip is perfect for those applications.

I have a Dobyns Extreme 744 for football jigs. Awesome rod for they say 1/2-3/4 oz. I think it's sweet spot is 1/2 oz. I plan on getting the 745 for 3/4 oz. and up.

Easily my favorite rod that I’m always picking up. The feel of it for me is outstanding. Btw it’s rated for spooks as well I just haven’t thrown them on it yet

I dont have it (yet), but the Dobyn's Champion 744 is specifically a jig rod.  According to Gary Dobyn's himself it has more power than a typical 4 power, was made specifically for jigs. Not trying to push one way or the other just passing on info.  Wish I could remember where I saw it at.  Good luck!

I have a fury 705cb and sierra 735. I love both of them.

It boils down to how thick of cover are u going to be pitching to, light to moderate cover 4 power is fine, heavy cover 5 or 6 power than decide how long of a rod you like7'0 ,7'3,7'4 the lighter the power the softer the tip I found .
