Hello all,

I have a quick question. I am a budget weekend angler and have found some low cost rods fit me just fine.

I have two of the 7" foot medium 1 pc cherrywood spining rods. I originally had two Pflueger President 30 size reels on that I have recently moved to a 7 ft light micro series by shakespeare and a 6' 6" wally marshall rod I've had for quite a while for trout and crappie fishing.

So this leads me to my question, I am looking for two replacement reels for the cherrywoods. I am completely content with buying two more president reels, but I am not sure what size. With the 30 size on the 7 ft rods, the rod balance was all the way in the tip. I am debating going with the 35 size to see if I can move some of that balance back to the rear or balance the rods.

What are everyone else's thoughts on this?

I would bring the rod in and try the reels on before buying. This way you will see what works for you. Some will say a size 35 reel is larger and heavier than needed, but as I said, if it works for you, that's really all that matters.

I prefer the 30 size on my bass spinning setups.  I like 25 size for walleye/crappie.  I have a size 35 President Limited Edition on a MH spinning rod, and I'm not a fan of the size.

But as mentioned, if it seems comfy to you, go for it.

The best way to counterweight a rod is to buy a Cush-It rod butt cover (add quarters inside if need be). Buy the reel that suits your needs best.

For my bass fishing anything application needing more than a 25 I pick up a baitcaster.

Rod balance is way over thought. It’s completely personal preference. If you want to change the feel one way or the other reel choice has minimal impact, almost none unless you grip completely ahead of the reel.

For my Bass fishing I have two spinners. A Trion-30 for small cranks/jerks and unweighted T-rigs and wacky rigs. For my finesse fishing - drop shots, Ned rigs, etc - I use the Avocet-2000. I looked at 35 and 40 size reels and they were too large for my taste.

Put the 30 back on there and tape 10 quarters to it. See how you like the feel of that, because that's the difference between the 30 and the 35 - about 2 ounces.

I've got that exact setup - 30 President on 7' Cherrywood, only difference is mine is a two-piece. It's nice and light, I don't know why you would want to add weight to it.

I've heard people say a balanced rod reduces stress on their elbow or whatever joints. Okay, I get that, but I don't think adding weight is good for your joints. I can't imagine what other benefit is derived from a balanced rod.

I put 5 quarters originally. That would only be one ounce.

I think you mean 2500.  A 25 pflueger is like a 1000 Shimano or daiwa.

Got that straight - my President 25 is smaller than my Avocet RZ-2000.

Thank you all for the responses. I believe I may just stick with what I know on a 30 series reel.

They have become my favorite spinning reel for the price.

You could try a lighter pflueger reel to see if it balances better.  President XT, Supreme or Cabela's has the summit XT for $49

I use the 35 size presidents. I grew up using Mitchell 300s so the little extra size and weight doesn’t bother me.

My first 'real' reel was a Mitchell 320...so I'm use to the mid-size to smaller reels.

That summit is actually really nice, I picked one up and am very impressed with it, I have an older shimano Stradic, as well as a penn battle 2, and I feel like the summit is smoother than both of those. That being said, it is newer. We will see how long it holds up.

Walmart has the Pflueger Supreme spinning reels for $79.95 online right now, very nice reels.
