jtharris3 Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Is it best to oil the worm gear or grease it periodically? Quote
a1712 Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 I've always used Hyper Lube. It is a thick, very sticky oil and clings to the worm gear very well. Brian. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 2, 2019 Super User Posted May 2, 2019 Worm gear you mean level wind? I use Break Free CLP lube because it doesn't tend to attract debris and adds a slick lubrication that is silent and smooth. Tom Quote

OnthePotomac Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 I have only ever used ReelX on my worm gears. But this another subject like do you like coke or Pepsi Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Yes, oil over grease. 1. The critical part is the groove where the pawl rides. People often just grease the outer face. 2. Grease collects debris which can be abrasive and/or clogging. Quote
MountainMan83 Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Oil all the way. I cringe when I purchase a new reel that's worm gear is caked with grease, although I kind of understand why they do it if it's going to sit on a shelf. 1 Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted May 3, 2019 Super User Posted May 3, 2019 I try to put a couple of drops of oil on mine every time I use them. Quote
CrankFate Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I go with an extremely thin layer of Cals Grease and one drop of CorrosionX Gun Oil. Once or twice a season. Somehow, this repels grit. I cringe at globs of grease or dripping oil on worm gears. It sends dirt up to the bearings/bushings. Quote
jtharris3 Posted May 3, 2019 Author Posted May 3, 2019 Thanks guys! I have some Reel Butter oil and some of the Lucas Oil reel oil. Both seem to be working well. Quote
