Jaketurner96 Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 I caught what looks to be a creek chub and bass hybrid. If you look closely it has 3 horns on each side of its face and they were symmetric. Was probably between 5-7 inches. It also had a pink colored belly and gills. Caught it in veterans creek in Lexington, KY. If you have any info on what it might be I would appreciate it. Have never seen anything like it in KY. Quote
BASS302 Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 My guess: male creek chub in breeding condition. https://fw.ky.gov/Fish/Documents/kyfishid[1].pdf top of page 17 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 1, 2019 Global Moderator Posted May 1, 2019 Bass and chubs can't hybridize. Hybrids in nature are rare and require very similar species for it to even be possible. Creek chubs can easily attain that size, and the males turn a rosy color and sprout "horns" during the spawning season. 2 Quote
mrpao Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Looks like a regular creek club to me. They are probably about to go into spawning mode. The males have the knots on their heads. I caught one of those about 10" one time. When it first hit i thought it was a small trout until I saw it. They will regularly hit small trout lures. They also love earthworms. We use to catch them all the time with worms. Then we would use them as bass and catfish bait. 1 Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted May 14, 2019 Super User Posted May 14, 2019 It's just a plain ol' creek chub. Not a hybrid. Quote
Hower08 Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 That's called a horny chub. Yes that's correct. They get them horns during spawning season 1 Quote
Russ E Posted May 15, 2019 Posted May 15, 2019 Male Creek chub. Used to catch them in eastern iowa streams frequently. They make great catfish bait. Quote
