Super User Koz Posted May 1, 2019 Super User Posted May 1, 2019 The other day Glenn mentioned the Bass Forecast app and he stated that he tracked some tournament results versus what the app was forecasting and he seemed to think it did a decent job of forecasting the fishing conditions. Since it has a 60 day free trial (with limited options) I thought I'd give it a try. The app rates the daily forecast on a scale of 0-10 and for the first 4 days that I checked it and fished the forecast was between 5.2 and 5.6. I bank fished 2-3 hours each of those days and caught between 2 and 6 fish each time. Today's forecast was 8.7 and as luck would have it I didn't have to work today. The app indicated the best fishing time during the day would be between 9:20 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. so I hit my most productive lagoons for that period of time. The result? Not one bite. I fished the baits and locations the app suggested and zip. Zilch. I fished the baits and locations that have been the most productive for me this spring and still nothing. I covered even more water and nothing. Frankly, I was excited when I saw the forecast, hoping it would be a great day fishing but the day ended in disappointment. Has anyone else tried this app? What were your results? After today I felt like someone sold me some snake oil. I'll keep checking it and see if this was an anomaly or if it pans out. Tomorrow is rated as an 8.6, but it's back to work and I won't get a chance to fish. 1 Quote
bigjean663 Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 Turns out I’ve got a couple of epic days headed my way this week. May have to call in sick lol. First I’ve heard of this app but just fooling around with it for the last 15 minutes or so I can see it being useful Quote
txchaser Posted May 1, 2019 Posted May 1, 2019 It saved my butt this weekend. I was going to fish regardless of the score, but it suggested a much slower presentation than I would have guessed based on conditions. As it goes I fished whatever I was going to fish for a while and only pulled in a few and those were halfhearted. Pulled up the list, hit the second lure on the list, and it was on. Wife showed up to bring lunch and fish with me for a while (how awesome is that) and I tossed it in while she was unpacking lunch and pulled another healthy 3 pounder out. It cost me about a bag and a half of senko's, so if it gives me an extra dial-in every now and then it paid off. @Koz my hunch is that it's best dialed in for bigger bodies of water in terms of the actual score. I'm interested to see if I can figure out how it is different; best guess would be that it's early/late depending on rising or falling water temp, under the assumption that the small bodies are changing temps faster. Dirtyeggroll Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 The data are based on a combination of weather patterns, moon phases and the results of a single guide in Texas. I’m sure it works fantastically to predict the catch rates of that guide! The problem is that people have different fishing styles AND people consider different things to be a good day fishing. After talking with one of the co-founders, Mike Melhmann about the generation of the app, it’s my understanding is that it the rating system is based on numbers of fish caught. I use the app and have not found it to correlate well with my fishing style, and have actually found that I have caught some of the biggest fish on low rating days. Also, the rating for the day is subject to change up until the day of. The other thing that the app lacks is that you can’t look at ratings for past days. All that being said, if I were planning a day of the week to go fishing and could only choose one, I would choose the day with the highest rating that’s not on a weekend. Otherwise, I fish whatever day I can. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted May 2, 2019 Super User Posted May 2, 2019 If it was free, I might download it for sh*ts and giggles, but would not give up a cup of coffee for it. Heck, I don't think there is consensus on this board on whether moon phase effects fish. Quote
Super User Sam Posted May 2, 2019 Super User Posted May 2, 2019 Koz, the app is another tool to be utilized along with all of the other information you have learned and experienced over the years. It can't help or hurt. It is another piece of the puzzle that you may wish to use to help with your confidence. Quote

I downloaded it and it gives me info for the current day but not an extended outlook. Good enough for me with a free app. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 2, 2019 Super User Posted May 2, 2019 I just downloaded it to try out. It certainly won't determine if I go fishing or not. It probably won't determine how I start my day fishing either. I usually have an idea and a plan in place. However, I will certainly consider the techniques it suggests if the bite is tough. Lord knows I need all the help I can get sometimes. Quote

Truthfully, I just fish whenever I can and something like that app wouldn't sway me from fishing. I was hoping that since I'm moving from this great fishing area in a few months there would be some correlation and I'd have a good day out there. OK - I just checked the app and it says tomorrow is an EPIC fishing day with a rating of 10 out of 10 with the best time being between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. I may take an extended lunch tomorrow and check it out. Fingers crossed... 1 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted May 3, 2019 BassResource.com Administrator Posted May 3, 2019 How many times have you seen fish on your graph, tossed in a line, and not caught anything? Did you blame your Lowrance or Humminbird unit? Just sayin' 1 Quote

I managed to head out for an hour today with only one bite and landed a decent one about 3 pounds, plus had one completely miss a buzzbait. Quote
