Finesse jigs and line

That being said, the finesse jig I throw is normally a 5/16oz Siebert Outdoors Sniper jig and I normally use 15lb fluoro for those. I don't like going down to 12lb line because the shock of a hard hookset on a short leash can lead to break offs.

I match up the line to the gauge of the hook wire, more so than the size or weight of the jig. Of course lighter jigs do often also benefit from being fished with lighter lines as well. I usually fish finesse and swim jigs on 12 lb mono, or 30 lb braid with a corresponding lighter, slower rod. I sometimes fish a compact flipping jig with fairly stout gear, but that's more of a niche thing.

Over that last three years I got really into fishing finesse jigs. 1/4 and 5/16 are my two fave sizes with a

Small size Yum wooly bug as a trailer. It became my go to pretty much because it's works so well.

My two rigs that are perfect for these are as follows.

 

Spinning: Medium action fast rod, Daiwa Tatula 6'6", 3000 size Shallow spool Tatula reel, 15lb Power Pro yellow to 12lb Seaguar FC.

 

Casting: G Loomis 6'9" MH, 7 speed reel, 30lb Power Pro to 15lb Seaguar FC.

 

These two rigs have caught me tons of LMB and SMB. The sensitivity is fantastic and the hookup ratio is almost 100%.

These two rigs are what I fished most of the time since I worked out the best way to fish Finesse jigs.

 

A 1/4oz SK Bitsy Flip with a Yum Wooly Bug will catch you all sizes of fish from 1lb-6lbs. 

My other favorite FJ are the Santone Texas finesse jigs in 5/16oz. Great strong jigs that hold up to many fish and stay together.

What’s everyone’s rod choice for finesse jigs? MH/F? M/F? Length? Handle length? 

I use the Falcon Cara T7 finesse jig rod, which is rated MH/F.  Power-wise, St. Croix might rate this a M or even a ML.  It's 6'10, and I would have to measure the handle, but it's pretty standard for a rod of this length.  It's got a Curado 70 reel on it.  I can't explain why, but this taper is perfect for me; I feel like I'm able to make the bait do what I intended it to do.  I fish the Jewell-tyle finesse jigs a lot in shallow rivers, and this is the ticket for me.

+1 ... A finesse jig profile can weigh any where between 3/16th oz. to 1/2 oz. so both a spinning  AND a bait cast set up can come into play .

"Finesse jig" for me means a 3/16 ounce Strike King Bitsy Bug jig with a trailer. Total weight is 3/8 ounce. This is my favorite bait to fish on my shallow rocky river.

 

My rod is a custom baitcasting rod made with a St. Croix blank SCV610MLXF (extended to 7 feet). It's rated for 6-10# line and 1/8-1/2 ounce lures. I fish 10# FC or co-poly.

 

Super sensitive and plenty of power on the hookset.

I throw a 1/8oz bitsy bug on a st. Croix avid 6’9” ml casting rod, Curado 100b and 30lb power pro. Works for me.

Thanks y’all. Seems like most people hover around the 6’10-7’3 range for rods. 

 

Line is a a wider range, 10-16lb fc or braid to leader. 

 

Jigs, I should of specified more on this subject. While almost throw lighter jigs: 1/8-1/4oz, I was thinking more finesse cut jigs. My lightest jig is 1/4oz for casting gear.
