I spray my legs, ankles, and shoes.  Keep out from under trees as they can drop down on you and I also try to wear the lightest color clothing I can so I can see them crawling.

first off DEET is insect repellent.. News flash, Ticks arnt insects,, got as much in common with an insect as a snake has with a deer.
Poster above mentioned the red can stuff. Its Picaridan based,,, way mo better on ticks than DEET,,, although not as good on mosquitos,, ( duh,, mosquitos are insects)
So for your skin, especially around your belt line, and top of your shoes or socks use a picaridin based repellent.
However before you head out, hit a feed store and buy some 10% permethrin,,, add 1 oz concentrate to 19 oz of water for 20 oz,,, Spray your cloths down good,,, pants shirt, socks shoes,,, let it dry,,, then be dun for a few washings. You can buy stuff like Sawyers clothes treatments that is pre diluted, but you are paying for water.

spray it on clothes. its very effective against ticks.

I have a dedicated hat, long sleeve shirt and gloves and buff, that I use that stuff on.

I still apply 30% DEET, before hand and I have not seen a tick in several years.

Buy a guinea hen and train it to protect you.

Yeah. I had a friends wife buy a dozen for their rural yard that was infested with ticks. After two months of that noise they ask me to come out and shoot them.

Tell your rural friend, buy a couple bags of cotton balls, and some 10% permithrin.
Cut the Mermithrin 1 part to 3 parts water,  Soak all the cotton balls in solution.
Spread em out in a shadey area or a garage and let dry,,, then place the cotton balls all around your property,,, in crooks of trees, under roots, in blocks,,, just any cubby holes you can find.
Birds and mice will find it, use it for their nests.
Ticks go through stages,,, larvae ticks feed on mice and birds before they get big enough to feed on dogs, cats, horses and us.
This cotton ball trick breaks the life cycle, can really help with lyme transmitting species after the second year.

I found one on me last week two days in a row. One was a lone star tick, the other is the one pictured. Not sure what species but they are extremely common around here in the woods

I usually carry some bug spray, 25% deet with me. If I'm in a wooded area, I'll often need it but in open areas the bugs aren't too bad -- although I live in deer tick country in the area with the highest infestation of lyme disease as well, so maybe I should use it anyway.

If the neighbor you don't like has a dog, take their dog, ticks will go to it instead of you. :-)

Seriously, long (light colored) pants and socks with the pants leg secured at the ankle with a rubber band or short bungee with some repellent sprayed on the pant legs for good measure will help. Stay away from higher grass if you can, and check the light colored pant legs often for ticks which are easily spotted on light clothes.

I don't fish from the bank much, but sometimes I have to pull the kayak through the stuff. I use a solution made up of 1 cup of water, 2 cups of white vinegar, and 20 drops of peppermint oil in a spray bottle. I have the bottle nearby so I can reapply middle of day. I hate spraying any chemicals on myself.
