Beginner frog rod that won't break the bank

I am looking to start doing more frog fishing would anyone have any recommendations of frog rods that are a good entry level frogging rod.

Have you considered the Ugly Sticks?

 

Great catfish rods and they do a good job with the Alabama rig and can be used as a frog rod.

 

After playing around with an inexpensive Ugly Stick and learning how to frog fish, you really need to get a "frog specific" rod. There are a number of them in the marketplace so you will have a fun time trying to consider which one is best for you.

 

Go to the Ugly Stick web page and type in "frog rod" and view what they suggest.

 

Then consider a "heavy" rated rod or move up to a rod designed for frog fishing.

 

Good luck and remember to bend those frog hooks outward a little with your pliers to help with hookups.

+1 here! I moved over to the "heavy" 6' Ugly Stick years ago, and I can get a hook set on the feistiest LMB or snakehead on the planet. The short ~ 9" handle is also a cool feature, it doesn't clank on me vest or the bench seat in my boat. They also fit the overhead rod holders in my Sierra bed topper which is only 6' long.

 

I bought four of them for something like $45 each delivered. For big fish I doubt you can spend a LOT more and get a substantially better rod.

I currently have a uglystik in 6'6" medium spinning and casting, just looking to get something more frog fishing specific rod

Looking in the 100$ range and yes I do have a reel

I started out frog fishing with a 7'3" mh veritas 2.0 and it never let me down. Great rod for that type of fishing.

I now frog with a Shimano SLX 7'2" h/f but they also have a 7'5" heavy fast. I just try to keep my rods under 7'3" as its the longest my Jeep Liberty ceiling Rod rack can take !

Fenwick HMX 7’6”.  I picked one up in Canada for about 120$ so if you’re in the states you can probably get a cheaper or wait till they are on sale. 

 I’ve been using it for about a year now and it’s my go to frog Rod.   Strong enough that you can pull pretty much anything out with it  light enough that you won’t get tired after using it all day (in my opinion)

 and it won’t break the bank either.

7'6" HF ? I read mixed reviews on it regarding frogs but it might be for the older HMX gen though. Read they had too Much give in their tip. How is yours ?

Ya it’s a heavy fast, compared to my MH fast rods in similar length the tip is fairly firm. I live in Canada so we don’t have as heavy grass like in southern states but I’ve pulled some bass out of decent thick weeds with it and have never had a problem with the rod. 

I don’t have any of the older models but it compares to my buddy’s 200$ frogging rod ( whitch by the way, just a little fun fact,  doesn’t have the power or action labels on it it just says “frogging rod”? )

Durability also plays a key role for me when looking to purchase a new rod

I have 2 of these rods, one that I've used for frogging for a few years now, it's the best frog rod I've ever owned.

 

Has a soft enough tip to load well to really fling them out there, but a ton of backbone to drive the hooks home and haul them out.

These are KILLER. I have 2 Dark Angel, one Angel EX. My 6'6" H is going to be great for 40lb braid, frogs, big Ploppers. The 6'6" MH is perfect all around, in my opinion and my Angel is the 6'6" M, great finesse rod.

I wanted a second rod, but one that was a dedicated frog rod. So, I just bought a Cashion Elite Frog Casting, in Heavy action.  It's pretty long at 7'6". But they have a flipping rod that looks tempting, also, for a shorter frogging rod.  Either way, I like micro-guides so much on a casting rod, that I don't think I'll ever buy or build anything else. again.

 

I've been so pleased with my Smoke Quantum S3, that I'm going to pair this rod with a second one, on 50lb braid.
