Unless you are fishing a pristine mountain lake, the runoff entering the lake is far worse than someone relieving their self.

Plus people may think you are a bit. strange, walking across the boat ramp parking lot with a jug of pee. So you can dump it in the porta potty.

I can't believe you just said that...   really..

Maybe so - but every little bit helps. I like to think I'm NOT contributing to the lake's pollution problem when I cart my 'waste' away with me.

Unless a pro angler is sick or off thier normal routine fishing isn't any different then any other line of active work. You know where you are going and develop a routine to reduce  needing to relieve yourself. I always go before launching my boat and usually works for several hours or until around lunch time. I know where the rest rooms are located and use them when needed.

For emergency every boat should have a jug used to pee in, the plastic hospital type with a lid is ideal, any jug big enough works.

Guys I am not talking about dumping toxics into the water. Urine is not pollution. It is actually fairly sterile.

animal and fish waste are already in the water.

What bothers me is the guy with an old outboard, leaking oil and leaving an oil slick in the water.

that is pollution and it happens a lot.

If you have any type of viral or bacterial infection - even if you don't have symptoms of such - those will also be eliminated through urine. Not adding those to a lake...even unintentionally...is the reason I don't 'do my business' over the side of the boat. Add to that, any chemical you're exposed to gets into the urine...so while it IS fairly 'sterile', it can have a lot of things that aren't good for the water in it.

Every little bit helps, and I do what I can. It might not be much in the grand scheme of things, but I am a bit of a 'tree-hugger' in some respects.

What is toxic having young kids in your boat and some guy is peeing off the back of a nearby boat. Use common decency, just because a cow is peeing in the lake doesn't mean you should.

I marshaled once & was a Bass Fest judge once and all of the pro's I was with pee'd in the water.  Ish Monroe made the error of peeing into the wind and ended up wetting the deck.  Gerald Swindle had a couple of spectator boats following him so he waited until he was in a narrow stretch of a creek and all the boats were behind him, so they couldn't tell what he was doing.

At the marshals meeting, this came up and a story was relayed about Ike at one of the Classics.  Ike's marshal had to pee, but there were over a dozen spectator boats all around them.  Ike told him to hold on for a few minutes as he finished fishing a spot.  Ike then fired up the big motor and flew like a bat out of hell for 10 minutes to the next spot.  As he came off plane, Ike turned to his marshal & said "you have about 30 seconds until they get here".

For me personally, it is the large necked Gatorade bottle.  If you are wearing loose enough shorts, it will even slide right up them so no one can see anything.

@Mike Schell  I apologize. You had a legitimate question and one of my posts turned it into something else.

Good Fishing.

I tend not to worry too much about "polluting" the lake. Since every other animal that lives in the lake or around it relieves themselves in it, I doubt if I'm going to cause any problems.

Regarding whether urinating into the lake is pollution, it depends on the number of urinators and the size of the lake.  1 person peeing into lake Michigan doesn't matter, ten thousand people peeing into a 1 acre farm pond does.  This goes for animal output as well.

We see this in Southern California, where we have too many people and not enough water.  For example, there have been times where Lake Perris, a 2200 acre lake in Riverside California, has been plagued by bacteria issues caused by human contact & excretions.  They have had to close the beaches there many times, once for a 100 day stretch.  The Water district will not use water from Perris for drinking, they instead pull that from other nearby resevoirs that don't allow human contact.

I'm still of the opinion that even small things CAN help. Everything starts small to begin...than can grow. Waving off someone peeing into a large lake encourages that behavior in ANY lake. Which is why I wouldn't even pee into Lake Superior.

To dismiss the idea that peeing in a lake - even a huge one - isn't all that bad just keeps the s-ball rolling downhill, gathering speed and mass.

1 person peeing once or twice is one thing, but now compound that by 100 or 500 in a day times days of the week then month.. that is a lot.

I don't believe we were talking about what encourages or discourages peeing into lakes, rather the thread morphed into whether or not peeing caused a problem pollution-wise.  One person peeing into Lake Michigan in & of itself does not create a problem as far as pollution is concerned.  You in essence agreed because you wrote that it becomes a problem when it becomes acceptable and more people do it.

The slippery slope argument is another discussion for another thread.

Huh? Is this a real question?? Let it rip wherever we are. With one hand on the reel of course

And on a slow day, this is one of the two scenarios when you are most likely to get bit.  The other being when you are preoccupied with a work phone call.

The technical term is 'pee cup.'

I can fish sun up to sun down and never have to urinate.

I am no expert but that can't be good for the kidneys. People claiming to have iron bladders also have bouts with cystitis I bet.

Stay hydrated my friend and bring a pee cup, bottle or jug. Mines a red solo cup. Don't want to mistake it's contents for a beer though :wink7:

Locals refer to it as the pickle jar.  We have a couple lakes where physical contact with the water is prohibited.  These are water supply lakes, and the water is pristine, little or no runoff, no cottages or dwellings on shore.
