New “Light Flippin” Rod

I have a St. Croix MJC71MHF that I absolutely love as my T-Rig/Jig rod, but I’ve been exploring some new areas in the Louisiana Delta and I’m looking for something with a little more backbone when I get into heavier grass. I’m usually only throwing a 1/2-5/8oz. Looked at the St. Croix MJC76MHMF and the Castaway SV72H. Like the Castaway a little more because it had a little more backbone and 7’6 is a little long for me. Any other recommendations y’all can think of?

Some places have the now-discontinued Falcon Lowrider 20 rods on sale.  They have several rods in the 7' to 7'3" range that would work well for you.  Last I checked American Legacy had them on sale for $90, which is a great price for a US made, quality rod.  I have 2 Lowriders (and about a dozen or so Falcons in total) and can attest to their performance.

Just looked at the Hack Attack on the web. Definitely going to go check them out in person. Looks like a really nice rod for the price.  I honestly don’t know that I’ve ever used a Lews rod before lol

Irod Fiber 744, 754, or 764. My first choice would be the 754. The Genesis 2 series is a bit lighter with better components, but built on the same blank.

Just an update Catt... haven’t had time to go out and check out the rod I was originally looking for, but I did pick up a 7’ Hack Attack MF “all purpose” rod. Really light and super sensitive. Good bit of backbone for a M action too. I’ve been using it for light T-rigs usually with a culprit worm or rage menace

I handled one of the new Powell Max rods in 7” extra heavy yesterday. It’s ridiculously light, and I love their new reel seats. Definitely on the short list of purchases. 

 

I have an older Max in 7”6 mag med heavy and I love it, it’s horsed some big, angry fish out of some real gnarly cover with ease. I would have the same confidence in their newest models.

The shimano slx in the 7'5 heavy would be a good option. As would several of the ones already mentioned.  Have no experience with the castaway rods but st croix makes some fine sticks. I agree tho that you probably need a little more rod and length for bigger jigs and heavier vegetation.

I hate to tell you but I think the only US made Falcon rods are the Cara line. I've heard rumors that they are being phased out, not 100% sure about that though.

The ones from American Legacy are the discontinued Lowrider 20 series.  They're US made, but they run on the slow side (taper) for their ratings.  They may fit your needs, but the models they're selling are somewhat shorter (which may suit you since you didn't like the 7'6 lenght).  Falcon also has the US made Jason Christie that runs about $100.  They're not really that light or sensitive (I have a couple) and they don't have anything longer than 7'3 in this line either.  Between the 2, a Lowrider 20 for $90 would definitely be the better one.

I have an old Crucial Flipping Rod that is 7'7" MH rated for 1/4-1 oz i think. I never use it since it is too much rod for my kayak fishing, but it pretty much checks the boxes you're looking for. I'm not sure if they have anything like this in current models, but worth a check. Think it was around $150 or so.

Characteristically speaking there's two rods in my opinion that come close to a Crucial.

 

One is the Shimano Curado which has most of the Crucial's characteristics except these are fast action vs the older extra fast. I personally prefer the older extra fast action.

 

Second is Daiwa's Tatula, this rod has very similar characteristics of the old Team Daiwa-V but with modern technology advancements in graphites & resins. 

 

What I like about the Daiwa is extra fast ?

What I like about the Daiwa is extra fast ?

I was just over at Academy on my lunch break and was looking at the Curado and Tatula. They only had a Tatula spinning rod, but it looked very nice. I thought the Curado's looked very nice as well. May try one out at some point.

 

I'm trying to upgrade to a bigger boat in the next year or so, and hope to finally utilize that rod. It has been on my rod rack for 6 or 7 years and has never been used.

The new Lowriders are imported.  The now-discontinued Lowrider 20s, to which I was referring, and still on sale at ALF, were US-made.  The US-flag emblem on the split grip, along with the "Made in the USA" plastered all over the manufacturer tags they came with, are a pretty reliable indicator.

 

As far as current Falcons, you're right, only the Cara is US-made.  Which is why I'm stocking up on some of the older models (Caras, Lowriders, gen 1 Bucoos) when I find them at fishing flea markets and swap meets.

Cool, I'm really only familiar with the original Lowriders, I assumed the 20's were the newest ones. It's a shame they are moving everything out of the country but I guess that's what they feel they have to do to be competitive, stock up while you can.
