pauldconyers Posted April 20, 2019 Posted April 20, 2019 I am sort of considering one of these Cush-it to try on my jig/frog rod. I've read that it might make the rod float, while nice I guess my interest in it would purely be a performance deal. I have heard people say it can really affect the balance of the rod, is that true? Frogging can really wear you out, does the added weight make it even worse? Just curious if anyone has tried them and had an opinion on them. Thanks! Quote

Super User MIbassyaker Posted April 21, 2019 Super User Posted April 21, 2019 I have some rubber chair leg caps I tried using for this -- put some coins or lead weight in there, and they help counterweight the tip of the rod (although they won't make it float, obviously). They worked well for that, but I took them off because I decided in the end that I didn't care all that much about "balance" after all... 3 Quote
pauldconyers Posted April 24, 2019 Author Posted April 24, 2019 Does anyone have any personal experience with these and an opinion they could share? Quote
smr913 Posted April 24, 2019 Posted April 24, 2019 I haven't used the one above, but I use a counterbalance I picked up from Mudhole on my iRod 744c. It was very tip heavy and the counterbalance made the setup balanced and it actually feels much lighter too. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 24, 2019 Super User Posted April 24, 2019 I use one on all of my flipping rods. I even add quarters inside of them to help change the balance point more to make it more comfortable to flip and pitch all day long. They also help prevent me bruising my ribs from multiple hard hooksets throughout the day. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 24, 2019 Super User Posted April 24, 2019 I will be trying the Cush-It for the first time this fall on my next trip south of the border. Purchase 4 after last trip. When the big fish bite is on, it only takes one morning to figure out I need something. After 5 or 6 days of balistic bass hook sets, the tissue damage is real. I expect this should all but eliminate the bruising. #rodrashwangs A-Jay Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted April 24, 2019 Super User Posted April 24, 2019 Not going to work for kayakers....or anyone else who uses a rod holder 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 24, 2019 Super User Posted April 24, 2019 So, I'm 39 and I don't really feel old. Well sometime last year I fished on Saturday and woke up Sunday morning and went to get in the shower and I noticed a few bruises on my stomach, I thought that was weird. They went away and then a couple months later, I fished on Saturday and woke up Sunday morning and the same thing. I went fishing later that afternoon and I realized what was causing it. LOL!!!! Guess that was my moment of realizing what people meant when they said wait till your 40, but I wasn't even 40 yet. Quote
johnD. Posted April 25, 2019 Posted April 25, 2019 That monstrosity will never get a dime from me..and I tarpon fish , even with 200 lb fish I still don't need it. People tend to forget the "pros" are paid to use the products you see them use. Quote

pauldconyers Posted April 25, 2019 Author Posted April 25, 2019 Regarding "tip heavy" to label a rod/reel combo as such is it purely a feel thing? Or is there some sort of trick or rule of thumb that if you put your finger a few inches up from the reel and it should balance or what? Quote

Ultimately, it's a feel thing, but you can hold your rod with en extended index finger, and see where it balances. I like one that balances no further up than the lock nut +- a 1/2 finger width. You can also use a pen and a couple of 3700 boxes (or any other flat elevated surface) to find the balance on a rod without a reel on it. 16 hours ago, BaitFinesse said: How are you guys jamming your rod butts into your ribs? Fishing moving baits tip down palming reel with left hand, handle laying between elbow and rib with line laying to left (I'm right handed), on bite, wind down and twist to left, and set by twisting at waist and shoulder right, butt will knock and lock against your side. Catch a couple of hundred fish in a week or two (love this time of year) and your side will look like a 3 day old black eye with all the different colors. Quote
