Need to pick up a top water rod

Im looking to spend $100 to $120 on a top water rod for baits like sammys and pop'rs. Ill throw braid on the reel likely to help with the walking action. What would you recommend? I was looking at the dobyns fury line

Dobyns fury is perfect for that. I have the 705CB ROD and it’s amazing.

Second time today I'm recommending the Okuma EVX. The 6'8" M/MF-F at $110 would be perfect for both your budget and your requirements, in my opinion.

I can second the 705 CB, I have the champion XP and it is amazing for sure.

I agree with the fury 705cb. Also works well with jerkbaits during the colder seasons.

I’ve got a used avid 6’6” medium action fast powered rod that does really well for topwaters that I’d sell for $100

I think you mean medium power-fast action.  Many anglers prefer the moderate action to slow things down since most of us set the hook too soon on the strike when fishing surface.  Also, if using braid, it would be good to slow it down a little.

Thanks for the advice guys! Would I be ok to use braid with the Dobyns 705? 

I appreciate the offer to sell me one but I am wanting something a little longer than 6'6

Yes, I typically use braid to flouro leader

Yes! I usually ran 30 lb pp braid. Add a leader if you want.

I like a shorter rod for throwing top waters because it seems like with a longer rod, I have to pay attention so that I'm not slapping the side of the boat as I do the downward jerk move.  Current favorite is an All Star Top Water Special 6'

that I got on sale at Academy last year for around $50.

Is a 705CB underpowered for a strike king sexy dawg? I think they weigh like 7/8 oz.

I use a Kistler tops and tails 6’9” medium for lighter and a 6’9” kistler crt medium heavy for the bigger walking baits.

its rated 1/4oz to 1oz so you would be good to go on the sexy dawg

I also have a 734 which would work also. My main issue is I have my cranking rod spooled with 12 lb flouro which is bad for topwaters and the the 734 has 15 lb flouro on it? Can I tie a mono leader to the flouro mainline on the 734? I’ve only tied flouro leader to braid.  Do I run straight mono on the 734 since I generally use it for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and paddle tails? I currently throw the sexy dawg on a 735 but it seems like too much power for that bait.

I’d look at a falcon Bucoo, they have a really soft tip that makes it perfect for top water. Plenty of backbone too

Popper and walking baits get different rods, but in both cases shorter than 7'.

I would probly spool up with braid and tie on whatever type of leader you need. Any rod I might want to use different baits on that is how I spool up. Only on my jig rod do I have straight flouro spooled and only on my swimbait rod do I have straight mono spooled.

Curious.  I read that Dobyns fish light.  Does the 705CB really handle 7/8 oz. lures?

They do fish lighter, and I contacted dobyns and they said a 734 would be a better choice.
