Think about how a Whopper plopper rolls over on top of the water when the prop isn't working right.  Got it?  ??

The last 3 bass I have caught (all small, 1-2 lbs) have done the same thing.  Makes them feel a lot bigger.

I catch bass that size quite a bit without that happening, so 3 in a row got my attention.

Anyway I'm on the bank making long casts and dragging plastics.  50# braid to #20 FC leader.  8.5:1 reel.  4/0 ewg with 3/8oz tungsten.

Thoughts?

Could be your reeling them in and the hook is off center with the mass of the fish causing them to spin as you reel them in. Just like rigging a non-straight or crooked plastic bait.

In the winter time (relative term here in SC) a lot of the fish don't put up much of a fight and hydroplane when you reel them in.

Either over powering small fish or big fish do roll upside down to shake the hook. Bass are one of the only fish I’ve seen able to shake their heads up and down instead of only side to side. I think because they do that upside down, it might be that they use the jaw hinge to do it.
