Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I've noticed that quite a few of us have some very old tin boats that we have restored. Mine is a 1964, yours? I just think it's pretty cool. When I look at these boats, I picture our grandfathers bringing them home new. I picture fiberglass rods and Mitchel 308's. I picture Mayberry, lol. I picture fishermen of days past watching down and smiling as their baby puts yet another generation on fish. So who else has an antique tin boat that they love like I love mine? Quote
moloch16 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I have a 1978 14' Smokercraft Jon. It's great for learning how to mod boats cuz I don't mind drilling holes and such in such an old boat. My only gripes are it leaks some, and doesn't plane well (fish-tales up and down at high speed). Any hints on finding / fixing leaks and getting it to plane? Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I'm in the club, i'm not even sure what year my boat is. It doesn't have a hin number and i think it is an old sears and roebuck 12' jon. It leaks quite a bit with two people in it but we can both stand up and fish comfortable, which is a lot better than sitting down for 6hrs in a canoe. Quote
smokepole Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I have an old memphis belle made by the Guy Barnette co. inc in Memphis tennessee. It is a great boat but I dont know the year but a few old guys to me they thought it to be a late 50 to mid 60 model it also has a 1958 johnson 7.5 on it. It should be out of the shop by mid week and on the water soon. Quote

Al Wolbach Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I have a 14' 1954 Feathercraft with 1955 35hp Johnson Seahorse(electric start). This boat belonged to my father until he died in 1956. Will pass to my sons upon my death..........AL Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 Cool Al. Is the seahorse one of the old green ones? Grandpa Mancini had one of those yrs ago. Quote
fishizzle Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I have a 1962 fiberglass Aquafleet 12'. 2 bench seats facing forward with 6" windshield and steering wheel. I did nothing to it but paint it and it was free with trailer Very heavy, sturdy boat with electric motor only for the small lake its on The boat vin plate says it will take a 25hp but I think that would be detrimental to yourself. Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 20, 2008 Super User Posted March 20, 2008 i think i have the most rinky dink boat of em all! on the title it says: "Make: Unknown Year:19unknown" i cracked up when i read that! this boat is a 12 foot aluminum. its in pretty bad shape. it leaks pretty bad, it is very tipsy, and its pretty crowded with two people + gear. i dont really like it very much, but i like it a whole lot more than being shorebound!!!! w4svc Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Mine is a 14 ft Quachita made in 1958 powered by a 2000 15 Johnson. Quote
moloch16 Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 Define "leaks" and I might have some suggestions. It doesn't leak all that bad really. Water just seems to materialize in the back of the boat slowly over time. I don't know where it comes from, and honestly haven't taken the time to try and find out I thought about filling the boat with water while it's sitting on the trailer and see where it leaks out. Open to other suggestions Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 thats how to do it. Take a yellow crayon with you when you do it, circle leaking rivets. Assuming it is riveted? Quote
smokepole Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 If that is true about the last 2 numbers of the serial number then I have a 1955. Thanks for that tid bit of knowledge. The boat is 14 ft and I'll probley wont sell it it is in great shape. Thanks again Quote

Low_Budget_Hooker Posted March 20, 2008 Author Posted March 20, 2008 real easy. try this 1st- flat hammer on one side and ball peen hammer on other side. Sometimes just re-hammering it can fix it. If not, drill out the bad rivets. From the bottom, insert a 3/4" stainless, tapered head bolt. Washer and nut on the inside and you're done. Some 3m 5200 adhesive on the threads will insure it won't back out or EVER leak again. (I had a 14 that needed 58 of these, lol. Heck, it was free.) If you have a friend that can weld aluminum, that works too, but make sure they know what they are doing, alum is tricky to weld for some. Quote

Open to other suggestions My Fisher leaked when I first got it. The bolts that went thru the transom were not only loose, but the wood had rotted so they had no holding power. I replaced the rotten wood in the transom, put the bolts back in, and siliconed them up good. NO MORE LEAKS. Quote
FishingBuds Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Hey Russ, cool man-I didn't even think about this. mines a 73 but make unknown, didn't find anything on the make either when I had her stripped down ;D I wonder what it could be? well anyway coool man, I love some old school stuff, picked up a herules 3 speed bike made in Nottingham england between 58 and 63, everythings there too (even has the old generator that rubs against the tire with lights on it)- The boss was throwing it away at work : Quote
Al Wolbach Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 Cool Al. Is the seahorse one of the old green ones? Grandpa Mancini had one of those yrs ago. No, it's gold/off white and a little chrome. The boat has the origional steering cables that run from the steering wheel(up front) down both gunnels and back to the motor. It has pulleys at all four corners. The steering wheel has a drum that takes up the the cable. A pull/pull system. It's really cool, and works quite well..................AL Quote

WV_Eagle Posted March 22, 2008 Posted March 22, 2008 OK, my turn...I've got a "pre-1974" Richland v-hull with a '78 Evinrude 15 hp. Someone before me decked it out but I'm planning on redoing it this year. Of course now that spring is finally getting here the thought of working on it and not fishing is causing me to reconsider! ;D Quote
Matt1736 Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 For the Aquafleet...do you have any more info on it, what other info does the vin plate have? I have an aquafleet but have never been able to find info on it and my vin plate is removed. Thanks Quote
riverfisher Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 I have a 12' 1963 Sears V with a 1963 2HP Evinrude. The boat dosient have one leak and the motor runs like it was brand new. Handed down through the family original owner was my Great Gradfather. Quote
