Watching the video I immediately thought “that was really dumb not having a kill switch”. But then again if it weren’t for this site 2 years ago I never would’ve worn a kill switch or a PFD while the outboard is on.

Yikes. I'd be embarrassed and then horrified watching my boat get closer and closer to land. In the end it's just stuff and he's alive. Hopefully he learned something from that experience.

Good time for me to relay a little story.  When guiding, there is a rule that when the big motor is on every occupant including me had to have their PFD on.  I had the added responsibility for the kill switch.  Never waivered never allowed anyone to complain enough to make me let them out of it.  I would always state that it was an insurance requirement (and it was).  Where I was a little "lax" was if I was out by myself pre-fishing or fun fishing.  The pfd almost always went on but I would "cheat"" if I was just going a short distance. 

 

Then one night I had a dream.  It started out as a great dream.  It was very early in the morning in the summer, I had the lake to myself and I was catching topwater fish.  Decided that I was going to run from up lake to down closer to the dam.  Since no one was out, I never took my pfd out of the locker.  Put the boat on plane and was running full throttle on water that was like glass.  Wind blowing in my face, shirt flapping in the wind.  Got to the mid-lake area and out of nowhere I hit a wake that literally threw me out of the boat.  Side Note: I used to pull a crazy stunt when I was young and stupid of jumping out of a ski boat when it was running full throttle so I know what it feels like.  I came up laughing and then a feeling of total dread came over me as I watched my boat continue down the lake at full throttle wondering where it was going to hit (at that time I did not have a hot foot) because I never connected the kill switch.  I woke up in a full sweat and sheer panic.  It scared me to the point that I have never started the big motor EVER AGAIN without my PFD on and Kill Switch hooked up.  My current boat also has a hot foot.

Lucky human.  Glad he was not hurt.  Seems people feel that this stuff always happens to the other guy, until it doesn't.  I had the distinct pleasure of running a few of those down.  Both unmanned and a few that had women & children in them who could not or would not operate these boats. So these rigs were powering along with passengers and no driver.  I remember the screaming.  Big time danderous coming alongside it and boarding these rigs to stop them.  When they were unmanned, if the oppurtunity presented itself, we'd play bumper boats and send it to shallow water effectively grounding it to a stop.  Some cases the boat gets stopped but the operator & or passangers were never recovered.

Please wear a kill switch when operating your out board motor.

I'm always a little afraid that I will find myself in a situation like the guys shooting this video.  A situation where someone needs help and you have to put yourself and anyone else in your boat at risk to help them.  It's not easy to make these kinds of decisions in the heat of the moment. They can be decisions with serious consequences that you might regret for a long time or just wonder if you could have done more.

What about us poor kayak anglers? Imagine the terror it would inflict seeing a out of control boat getting closer and closer as you try to pedal or paddle out of the way. 

 

Clearly the guy lacked common sense. No life jacket was his choice and his life to loose in the end. The lack of using the safety lanyard puts others at risk and shouldn't be excused. He should be fined and his boat should be impounded for the fishing season to teach him a lesson.

^^^Could not agree more. It wasn't just him that was in danger. Pretty much anybody on the lake could have been killed by this person's decision. There should be serious punishment for this.

My best friend and fishing budding drowned 15yrs ago on a lake he lived on. A fisherman found his boat doing circles early on the 4th of July. They found him a few days later. Sure wish he'd have worn a kill switch and life jacket.
