Super User Cgolf Posted April 16, 2019 Super User Posted April 16, 2019 I was trying to reply to a thread thinking I was logged in, and there was one of those smart capture, put the puzzle together, in the same wire frame as the submit button. It was weird because it also let me multi quote too. When I did the puzzle and tried to submit, it of course failed and I realized I was logged out. What gives? this was a tad confusing, because it actually looks like you are logged in. I posting as a guest isn't allowed would have expected the submit button and quote features to be greyed out or the create an account or sign in message to be listed at the bottom of a thread. I saw this both on PC and iPad. Quote
PersicoTrotaVA Posted April 16, 2019 Posted April 16, 2019 Coookies saved on your computer had the web browser served a page that has you logged in. When you hit submit the token for that session is no longer valid so it prompts you to log in or it fails to post due to not being logged in. Always be sure to log in first then post. Quote

The weird thing is I see different behavior on another forum that uses a similar format, could be the same base forum? Also this is even different from this site in the recent past, who knows, was just throwing it out there to the mods in case a setting got flipped behind the scenes. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 16, 2019 Super User Posted April 16, 2019 All I know there were security updates recently, as well as minor bug fixes. I've seen "guest" posts, but assumed they were from new accounts that had made it through validation, but not yet confirmed. Maybe @Glenn knows? Also, I'm always logged in, unless I'm accidentally using private browsing on mobile. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted April 16, 2019 BassResource.com Administrator Posted April 16, 2019 This is a new feature designed to engage casual visitors to the site. The forums already makes it easy for guests to sign up using external services such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. However, there has to be a conscious decision to click that sign-up button. For some, this may be a barrier too many. This new feature reduces this barrier by allowing guests to create a post to a topic they want to engage with. Once they have posted, they are asked to simply complete their registration. They are more likely to do this now. When browsing the forums, guests will see the ability to submit a post, with an explanation that they can post now and complete registration later. The only thing they have to provide in addition to their post is an email address. If you're already a member but signed out, the message explains you should log in. Of course, you can create your reply and then log in to post it too. This new feature should make it easier for guests to sign up and become members. Hope that helps! 4 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 16, 2019 Super User Posted April 16, 2019 I get it now now. That is a seriously powerful engagement feature! Quote

Super User J Francho Posted April 16, 2019 Super User Posted April 16, 2019 Just now, NittyGrittyBoy said: Assuming guests comments will have to be moderated more frequently? A guest comment would be treated under the Rules and FAQs, like any other post. If you see a problem, you can use the report button to bring it to our attention. Quote

I was thinking the same thing. While it may be a great feature for some who don't want to go through the hassle of creating an account, this feature is a trolls dream. 1 Quote

This doesn't allow guests to post. It allows them to make their post, but they then have to register before they can post it. 1 1 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted April 17, 2019 Posted April 17, 2019 Nice work. Sounds like a great feature then! Quote
